Q: is this liquid metal or liquid alcohol

Probably it is not liquid metal; it could be alcohol or something else. However, it was useless as it would not shake down once up.

Q: I can't get this to shake down as someone else has commented. Anyone know a trick to get it to shake down?

I taped mine (in its case) to a two foot piece of automotive electrical wire and whirled it round and round for about a minute...seemed to work. Tape it good, of course, so it doesn't fly off!

Q: What is the liquid if not mercury ?

I don't know what the liquid is, but don't buy it because you can't shake it down. An unusable product as far as I'm concerned.

Q: Is it easy to read? (some mercury thermometers are extremely hard to read)

I haven't had any problems reading it at all. It's works well and when comparing readings with other thermometers, it's very accurate.
