... yesterday- a day later than expected - and i LOVE it!
I received this yesterday- a day later than expected - and i LOVE it!! I was worried that it wouldnt fit my camera cage / rail system but it fit like a glove. I love the swinging door and the two filter tray slots! Now, to be honest, ive only had this for two days now and have not yet field tested it, but i cant imagine ill have problems. The mattebox itself is made of very durable, thick plastic and the barn doors are made of metal. I dont know the actual weight of this thingvbut its fairly lightweight. I would recommend putting a small weight on your rails or when putting this on a tripod to balance your system. I have had one «problem» already, however. - one of the side doors has already loosened, allowing it to swing back and forth. As long as i dont do any fast panning or tilting, i dont think it will become a real problem. Im assuming they will all loosen eventually though. Ill just have to keep an eye on them. Conclusion: i LOVE this product!! It gives my gear a real professional look!

Add Filters and Block Flares: Exactly What a Matte Box Should Do
*My 4 star review is based on the price of this product, and is not meant to be a comparison to professional models*What's the purpose of a matte box? Well, according to a lot of reviews here, it's to look professional. My clients seem to be more concerned about the final results than how professional I look on the shoot. They also hire me *before* they see my gear, so I'm not sure what impact this would have on their opinion of me. If you're looking to buy a matte box to look more professional, then they sell $20 ones that will do the trick. For anyone who needs a matte box for its intended purpose but is on a budget, I highly recommend this one. I have a friend who is also in the business who was giving me a hard time for not buying a higher-end, big name matte box. I'll tell you what I told him... It holds filters and blocks flares when I need it. What exactly does the $1,000 version do beyond that? And that's the point. If you're looking to up your game by adding filters to your work, then this is a great solution. If, like me, you have multiple lenses with multiple different thread sizes, the annoyance of having to find the right adaptors for the right lens filter becomes a hassle on fast shoots. Yes, 4x4 filters are more expensive than screw ons. However, you can use them for any lens or any rig. The swing away makes switching lenses a snap, and the adjustable filter holder is great for dialing in any graduated filters in your bag. With two holders you can stack filters and try to find some interesting looks. My camera has ND filters built in, but if yours doesn't you'll be able to stop down excessive light and still add a look to your shoots. It's win win.The build quality is solid. The flags are a little flimsy, but those shouldn't take a lot of abuse anyway (beyond your normal scratching wear and tear). The box itself is solid and feels like it will last a long time. The only gripe I have is the quality of the filter holders themselves. They are a little flimsy once you get them into the box, but, ultimately, this isn't much of an issue. As mentioned by many other reviewers, the packaging would fall under the "no frills" category. Mine came wrapped up in multiple layers of plastic wrap. But all of my pieces were there and nothing was broken.Ultimately, if you want to start building a filter collection to add a professional look to your films/videos, this is a great place to start. It won't break the bank and it will accomplish exactly what you need. It's easy to put together and use, and the swing away feature is really, really nice. If you're just interested in how it looks, sure... it looks great too.

Good starter Mattebox
Being the cheapest (real) mattebox on Amazon, I shouldn't have expected much. My issues with this mattebox are annoyances more than deal breakers, but I'd buy a more expensive one for professional productions. The filter holders are a little big and don't hold the filters I used with the tighening pin, I need to use tape. The swing mechanism is great for changing lenses, but it jiggles a little bit. This can pose an issue but it's only been a minor annoyance to me. My biggest issue is the stupid side rails, 1, i couldn' get them to fit in their holes without a hamer and even then they dont come out without a ton of force. 2, The use a different size thread than standard 15mm rods, making them useless for extending my rig. Lastly, the sun shades need to be loosened with an Allen key, adjusted, then tightened, otherwise the screws will loosen or strip. It holds two filters really well and if you carry an Allen key on set, the shades work great, not to mention all the cool points I get from filmmakers and clients alike. Get this only if you are coming from nothing and want to avoid selling your house, car, soul, and child to get a high-quality mattebox.

It’s a matte box look alike. A toy.
Sure, if I had nothing else, I’d use this matte box. The build quality can be considered decent but only in a toy category. It’s badly designed, the eyebrow flag will not stay in the desired position unless you tighten the screw with the included hex key and will become loose immediately after you make an adjustment. Feels like designed by someone who has never been on a video/film set. Fotga really does not innovate, they’ve had this poorly designed matte box since the early 2000’s. It’s time for a better design.

Poor Customer Service/ Product Came Missing Parts
This product is relatively decent product for the price, its not the best quality but its also one of the cheapest matte boxes on the market with this amount of useful features (swing away, filter holders, 3 barn door). However, the product i received was haphazardly packaged and seemed to have been a used and returned model which had some scratches on the matte box and much to my dismay, missing screws to hold the barn doors on the box. Without these screws the box was useless and so I decided to contact Fotga customer support who agreed to send out replacement screws for me. After sending my address and not getting a response or the screws within the return period, I decided to return the product for a slightly more expensive matte box.
