Many Children Of The 21st Century Are Not Exposed To Old Stories:
When I was about seven-years-old a family member gave me a recording, (78s) of the Pied Piper of Hamelin narrated by Ingrid Bergman. As I listened, I could see the characters in my head and never tired of the story.A month ago I bought the book for my eight-year-old granddaughter who lives about eight hundred miles away from me, because I was afraid with the passing of one more generation, the story might be forgotten. It is a lovely book, written by Robert Browning more than a century ago. The drawings are perfect, given the dated language used in this book. And the story has a simple message, about honoring our promises.Sadly, my granddaughter glanced at the book and was clearly not interested. I wanted to read it with her, intending to make clear the English used by Browning. So, a tale almost twelve hundred years old bit the dust, at least in our family it did.But if you are a lover of this fable, it is worth your time to try it out on the children in your family. They will be the richer for it.

... of The Pied Piper was one of my most favorite books when I was a very young child
The Derrydale edition of The Pied Piper was one of my most favorite books when I was a very young child. I was heartbroken when it was lost in a house move some years ago. I have been looking for it for years, and was overjoyed to finally find it. The book I received was in great condition with only some minor wear on the cover (as you might expect from a nearly 40 year old children's book). Very satisfied!

For older children
Beautiful book and illustrations but meant for older children, not a 3 year old. However, grandson really enjoyed the story and learning new vocabulary.

Warning for Kindle shoppers
When you look at the preview of this book under the "Kindle" tab, all those great 19th century color illustrations are there, and they are goreous. It is at least half the reason I decided to get this editon rather than looking for it in a Robert Browning "Complete Works". I know, its free, so what's the big deal. The problem is that I see the Kindle, especially in color, is a great tool for delivering books to kids, and there are other similar classic kids books where all the great illustrations are there, intact. And, this is faulty marketing. It is promoting something you do not get. Again, I know, it's free. But I'm still disappointed, and you will be too, if you want the classic art work for children.

Famous "Morality Tale" Beautifully presented.
I bought two copies of this title, the first being the poem "translated" into story form for a younger grand-daughter, while the second was the poem as Browning wrote it. It has always been one of my favourites, and I hope that the children will come to enjoy it as much as I always have. As the books are birthday presents, I won't know about the poem proper until after 11th June, and the story version won't be read until after 12th August. Both books beautifully formatted, and, as usual, the final part where the little crippled boy misses out on what he does not know, except that he has a very strong feeling that, through the mountain, there is something wonderful, still makes me feel sad. As a crippled child myself, I never had a mountain to go through, nor a Pied Piper to follow - but I simply understand that a crippled child is not physically equal to other children. Luckily, I didn't miss outon anything, other than never becoming first in a race at school!

Illustrations not in colour
Poem can't be faulted, but disappointed that the illustrations are black and white. Also, cover bent due to careless packing.

A classic poem
I remember much of the word to this poem but it is one that lends itself to many re-readings.
