Paper Quilling Chinese Style Review: Inspiring and beautiful quilled designs - The photos in this book are beautiful. The book is eye candy; there are no snowflakes or silly dog faces or teddy bears. This is quilling as a mature art form; not something silly aimed at children. As soon as I looked at desertcart's "see inside" feature I was hooked on the imagery and wanted to try making some of these designs. I would not choose it as a first book for quilling if you're never tried the craft, but quilling is basically rolling strips of paper and gluing them shut and squeezing them into shape. If you can do basic shapes you should be able to follow the instructions and photos to recreate the art shown. I've had the book a little over a week now and I've made the dragonfly (6. Dragonfly Skimming the Water Surface). I didn't have enough of one color of paper to do the body and wings so I used multiple shades of red and silver, and I added some rhinestones to the eyes to give my insect a bit of pop. I haven't quilled in years so this was my first project in a very long time and it came out reasonably well. There are four chapters broken down into sections. Chapter 1 talks about the Chinese take on quilling, and Chapter 2 introduces the basics, including materials, tools, and ten basic techniques. Chapter 3 gets you started on easy projects, and Chapter 4 includes advanced lessons. There's also a short appendix of shapes at the back for easy reference. The sections include short descriptions of what the art represents. For instance, the section on the Carp talks about how the carp is an auspicious symbol and gives a little bit of background and history. The text is a little dry, but the information is interesting, and seeing how the artists draw on Chinese folk tales is giving me some ideas for drawing from other cultures as well. Review: Gorgeous pics with tutorials - I recently bought several quilling books and most of what I bought had pictures only, and no "how-to". This book provides both. As the title of the book implies, most of the projects are simple and elegant-looking, with a focus on Asian themes like cranes and Asian scenery. This book is a Must Have.

Blown away!
I am absolutely stunned at the beauty of this wonderful book. The quilling projects are amazing, and at first I thought I wasn't going to be able to do it but it certainly is a new technique and one that I am thoroughly enjoying learning. I highly recommend this book if you're into quilling, because it takes it to a whole new level. While I understand in the book the idea is to use your own creativity I would have liked to have had a little more instructions on the length of the paper to be used. However, I am learning that that is where creativity comes in and that is what is emphasized in this beautiful book. I am so glad I purchased it.

Designs are modern and beautiful!
Love this book! The quilling designs are much more sophisticated than found in other books. The designs are spectacular and for an experienced quiller, you'll likely have no issues mimicking the designs. However, for a beginning quiller such as myself, the instructions are SEVERELY lacking. Just know that if you want to make one of the designs, you may need to learn some of the techniques used in the book from another source, or simply figure them out on your own through trial and error. Even so, I'd definitely recommend getting this book... It's aspirational for me!!

Beautiful and inspirational book
I love this book. I read it from cover to cover and could not wait to begin the project in my head. It is truly inspirational and has the most beautiful art. This is well worth the cost. All of the pages are applicable to answer your questions, give you inspiration, and show you the true spirit of quilling. This is unlike other books where you bend one corner for your favorite page and end up with 5 favorite pages out of the entire book. Great job in conveying this art.

Fascinating Quilling Book
This book is a fascinating book and a valuable addition to any quilling book collection. The quilling technique used is pretty simple, mostly multi-stranded crescents (like the project on the book cover). It's the composition that makes this book amazing: birds, fish, flowers, landscapes, etc. with Chinese artistic style. The book has very nice photographs for each project and the projects are organized from beginner to advanced levels. Each project starts with an introduction of the project in Chinese cultural context which makes it interesting. The English translation reads a bit strange at times, but it is still interesting. Although there are ample instruction steps with color photos, this may not be a good book for anyone looking for precise patterns and measurements. This book will provide many ideas and inspirations.

Love!!!
I had gotten a bit bored with quilling as I know it (flowers, small shapes for cardmaking, etc.) and am not quite ready for some of the advanced stuff I've seen (Erin Curet), but I wanted to try something different. I looked at some of Yulia Brodskaya's work and started hunting around for different quilling techniques. I found this book. Wow. Gorgeous!! I haven't actually tried to quill anything from this book yet as I just got it, but at the very least it offers a lot of inspiration, which is more what I am looking for. Note: I don't use patterns and I've gotten pretty good at guessing lengths for different sized projects, but if you are looking for precise measurements for your projects (except for the backing size), this book doesn't provide them. Visual instructions, yes; paper lengths, no.

I wish I could give this book more than five stars. It is so much more than just another quilling instruction book. The authors encourage readers to use what they have learned to create their own unique pieces of art. I am totally delighted with this book. If you love quilling and want to learn more than the basic shapes, then this book will show you how. It is a little advanced for the beginner so don't buy it as your first quilling book. But tools and basic shapes are discussed and it is a good refresher. There are beautiful photos of quilling art through-out (all in colour) The authors show you how to make each piece describing the techniques in detail and also telling the reader the story behind the picture. I loved learning more about the history and culture of China. All in all, this is a fabulous quilling book!

Being the crafty crafter I am I'm usually on the look out for new things to try. I usually do papercutting or gold foil prints, both of which I love. I decided to have a look round on the net to see if there's anymore hobbies a could take on. I came across this absolutely stunning fish made of swirly patterns and 3D looking so decided to find out how it was made. That's when I came across quilling, the fish I had seen was made of paper! I thought no way there has to be more to this. I looked around and came across lots of patterns made by paper quilling and to be honest it looked like a relatively cheap hobby considering there are no fancy tools or machines required. Although I'm a beginner I decided to get this book as something to aim for. I would say it's for people more familiar with the art although with time and practice I'm sure this could be learnt quickly. The book is a lovely quality with thick pages and an inviting front cover with step by step instructions on creating pretty patterns and designs. This would make a lovely gift also as the presentation is wonderful. I have tried my hand at the different designs but it takes me a while as in such a perfectionist. I also purchased seperately a quilling starter kit, it was only a few pounds but came with paper, a board and tools that get you started. If you're a beginner than that may be a good and inexpensive way to start. I would recommend this book to any quilling fan beginner or advanced
