Fits a standard electrical junction box. Boosts powerline signals by providing a bridge between the two, 120 VAC electrical phases (A and B) in a split-phase, 240 VAC home. Without a phase coupler, signals travel out to the street transformer on one phase and comeback in the home on the other phase; usually at a lower (attenuated) level. In homes up to 2000 Sq. Ft. and within 100 feet of the transformer, phase coupling may not be needed. As the size of the home and distance from the transformer increases, phase coupling becomes more important. The command is not only sent over the powerline, but also over a wireless link between devices. I have found that this redundancy makes Insteon systems considerably more reliable than any of the others out there. It also makes many of the modules more expensive. I have some devices that are way too far away to be reached by a wireless signal, but the commands get there just fine over the powerline. There are other modules, where transformers or other impediments prevent the powerline control signal from reaching a given module. In this case the wireless command activates the commands. The fact that Insteon communicate in both directions, makes it possible to inform the controller when a signal has not been received or the command carried out by the receiving module. On some modules, if there is no load connected to it, it will send back a failure signal to the controller even though the control signal was received correctly by the module.
