I set it down in place of his regular water bowl and we watched him for a few minutes as he figured out how to lap up water from the middle. It seemed like this bowl would do the trick. But here's where we went wrong: we then left the house for an hour. When we came back we found that he had upended the whole thing and dumped water everywhere. The bowl itself was in his dog bed and the plastic floater was nowhere to be found. (It later turned up between the couch cushions.) We tried filling it again but this time the dog went straight to work on tipping it over, so we had to go back to his regular bowl. NOW, however, little furball has retained the knowledge of how to tip over his bowl, which he had never done before, but he now does occasionally (just for laughs, it seems). I'm giving it 3 stars because it's our fault for leaving him alone with it so soon. I think it might have worked if we would have been there to supervise for longer as he was getting used to it. So my advice to others is introduce this bowl on a day when you're not going anywhere. Good luck! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Definitely worth a try *by R***1 on Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2014* I purchased this bowl for my terrier who gulps down his water (and will empty a water bowl without fail) in the hopes of slowing him down. For the most part, the bowl did the trick. The float only allows so much water to get through at a time. There is some nuance to its use - how much water to put in at a time, for example - so be ready to experiment if it lets too much or too little water through, or if your dog seems to have an issue with it.There are some important potential drawbacks to note about this bowl. First, the float can appeal to some dogs as a toy. My water-gulper didn't see it this way, but his housemate did, and the float would often go missing around the house after being snatched up by him. The float also has a small opening for adding water (for float adjustment) that requires a little stopper that is easy to lose...especially if your tog uses the float as a toy. Also, clever dogs will likely realize that a press of the paw will force more water through for easy drinking.In spite of all this, there is a reason I say this bowl is worth a try. In the worst-case scenario, you still end up with a very useful bowl. It's sturdy, sizable, and doesn't slide around. The float mine came with has long since been chewed up, but the bowl continues to see good use. So if you have yet to find a solution for a dog who drinks too quickly or makes a mess, be willing to give this a try, as you have a strong chance of success and you won't be throwing your money away even if it fails. ### ⭐⭐⭐ Not quite ideal for pets that drink a lot, too quickly. *by S***A on Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2015* I purchased this bowl because my dog has chronic leukemia and he drinks a lot of water and thought it would help him control water intake. Not only does he drink a lot, he gulps it down so fast he ends up throwing it right back up.I am giving it 3 stars (Okay) because he still throws up water, just not as much as he used to from regular water bowls. You will need to clean this bowl diligently to keep it clean, more so than regular water bowls because of the floating obstacle that tends to get very slimy from the pet's saliva & protein.For what it claims to do, it's a bit expensive. But I have decided to keep it because it has alleviated the problem a little bit. I think if you have a dog w/ same problem as mine, you're just better off getting a something which allows limited water intake from a water feeder.
