You have to let it warm up for about 15 minutes to get that full radius effect, and you won't get all the protection if it is a windy day and you are upwind from it. Today, I was painting the deck for about two hours in the evening (because that was the only time I could do it to avoid rain)... dusk is the worst time for mosquitoes. I only got one bite, and that was an exception because I was squatting in the grass as I was painting the side of the deck, and the thermacell was on the other side. Still, only one after two hours… That is amazing for me. Normally, Even when I wear long sleeves and pants, they bite me through the fabric. If I wear bug spray, they still come and bite me in the spots in between or wait for the spray to wear off. This is the only thing that has worked for me. It's supposed to work in a 15 to 20-foot zone, but outside, with or without wind, we found that the effective radius was less than 3 feet. For us, it works best when placed at seat-level., and my wife places it between our chairs that are practically touching. This unit emits a small stream of 'smoke'. The refills are expensive, and they last about 40 hours for the new series.
