It was a hard type of material. Just be careful not to get any pieces inside. If you have to remove the valve cover to do it (but that may require a new gasket). **Q: A 4.0 is a 4.0 correct? Regardless if it’s a wrangler or Cherokee, right?** A: I got mine for a 4.0 inline 6 wrangler.
