Best map for planning
Just what I was looking for. Comprehensive, but easy to read. Not flimsy at all and a cinch to re-fold. Sharpie works well to plan out routes

Handy
Handy and up to date, as long as you get the current version. Waterproof, and works where there is no cell coverage (which is still much of CR).

Helpful in planning and in navigation
Large durable map, it the country was split into two parts, one on each side. Made it a bit more challenging to use as we traveled. We used the map for both planning our trip and for navigation when we were in Costa Rica. Didn’t show all roads—GPS took us on main roads that were not labeled on the map. I was using the map to make sure the GPS made sense as sometimes the fastest route was not a real road. But not all ‘real roads’ were labeled.

Nice to have
I ordered this for my recent trip to Costa Rica. I wanted it in the car I was renting, because it was said that GPS doesn't work everywhere, so I wanted a back up. Well, the GPS on my phone worked fine, so I never opened the map while on vacation. But all the routes that I had planned on taking were there on the map, just in case. I don't feel bad having spent the money for real insurance.

The world has moved on for travel
This is a large, durable map that we got for a trip to Costa Rica. It's nice to be able to get a sense of the lay of the land from this large format. In our actual practice on the ground in Costa Rica we found that Google Maps was the tool of choice. It even let me locate a tiny laundry in Nosara that was on a road that is probably not on any map except Google. The large National Geographic map is probably now out of date. We visited the Children's Eternal Rainforest in Monteverde, the largest privately owned reserve in Costa Rica. It has existed for years. It isn't even on the map!
