Bones And All (Blu-ray)

A Great First-Date Movie -- for Albert Fish
Almost exactly a decade ago, back in 2013, I bought and read the book, "Deranged: the Shocking True Story of America's Most Fiendish Killer" (STS). While STS couldn't be called "light reading" by nearly anyone, it's another excellent read written by Harold Schechter, a true-crime author who knows a thing or two about evil things that men do. Or women I suppose. But STS is about Albert Fish and if you've heard anything about that Depression-era "gentleman" serial killer (SK) you will realize that "Deranged" is certainly an apt title. It's almost impossible to even write anything about Mr. Fish without offending someone so I won't even try. I'll just let you do a little research about him on your own time. If you dare. But there are people really out there in the real world on the "margins of society" as the synopsis for "Bones and All" (BAA) alludes to and Mr. Fish proved it. Mr. Fish had to hide his fetishes -- he had many of them, too many to list here -- but he could function well enough in society that he was able to fool people into thinking he was at least somewhat normal. As a matter of fact he was able to convince the parents of a young girl, a family that he had just met that day -- after giving them a gift of cheese and strawberries from memory wrapped quite nicely -- to let him escort their daughter alone to a "birthday party." Even if you don't know the story you will know immediately that this one does not end well. But I bring up Mr. Fish because there's a character in BAA that I believe had to have been modeled after that real-life SK. Mark Rylance plays "Sully," an older gentleman who seemingly has his sights set on a much younger character named "Maren Yearly," played by Taylor Russell. Both of these actors do a terrific job in their roles and it's hard to imagine any actors doing better. Well, except for maybe Albert Fish if he were to play Sully, although while I know Mr. Fish was more than a "bad actor" in real life I don't know if he could be a "good actor" too. But the audience doesn't know if Sully's intentions are "pure" -- well at least as "pure" as intentions could be once we know even a little about Sully's, well, idiosyncrasies -- or if they're potentially darker. But Maren doesn't really know either but she's willing to take a few minor chances to find out what this "Sully Guy" is all about. But this is one thing that I really liked about BAA. The audience learns about Maren's life in bits and pieces just as Maren does, and the writer and director do this through multiple devices: a tape recording from Maren's father that she listens to on-and-off through the film; meetings that Maren has with various people from her past that she didn't even know existed until the last minute; discussions with her on-again-off-again kind-of "boyfriend" played very well by Timothee Chalamet; and other devices as well. But while watching I truly felt like a "fly on the wall" which, in the context of BAA, could be I suppose a bad thing during some scenes, scenes that I won't discuss much for reasons you'll learn about while watching.BAA is listed as a "horror and drama film," and I suppose that might be true. Most of the movie is actually quite beautiful, as other reviewers have discussed. But there are a handful of scenes that are more than jarring and I felt like covering my eyes during those scenes, although I didn't. I suppose it's like watching a car crash and you simply can't turn away as you want to see if anyone will survive. But oddly even some of those scenes can be beautiful even though they seem like scenes that might be pulled from a David Lynch film.I think there might be multiple themes going on and I was careful not to read too many reviews before watching the movie. All I really knew was that most critics really liked it. But BAA reminds me a bit of "Let the Right One In" (LTROI) or the American remake starring Chloe Grace Moretz called "Let Me In" (LMI). I watched both of those movies in that order quite a few years ago and I like them both although I might write that LTROI is maybe slightly better. But those movies seem to ask the audience, "If you knew someone who had a trait that was considered completely abhorrent by society, how far would you go to protect that person if you truly loved him or her?"But I think that maybe the phrase "Bones and All" potentially has multiple meanings. One is given in the film that has a literal meaning which I'll let you learn if you take my big recommendation to watch BAA. But another one might be, "If you love someone you must love her 'bones and all,' or rather, for the good things and especially the bad." I'm not sure if the writer and director intended these themes but that's what BAA "said" to me while I watched.I'm going to give a big recommendation once again for "Bones and All" although I would recommend not having it be a first-date film for you, unless maybe you're Albert Fish. But if you're looking for a movie that has great writing, direction, acting, and cinematography, well, BAA is bloody-well good. Ahem.

Will they find love?
Can two young people, thrown together, but with distinct culinary requirements, find love? We first see Maren when she does something that ruins her welcome at a party, and her father knows they have to leave immediately. She doesn’t really know who she is, but her father leaves her a tape, money and her birth certificate. On the bus journey to find her mother, she meets Sully, a very interesting character who seems to have the weight of what he is on his shoulders, and he clues Maren as to what she is and her needs. But she leaves him, and meets Lee, as they recognize each other by smell. They develop a romance as they drive to find her mother. She finally does, but it doesn’t turn out like she hoped. But she is starting to come to terms with what she is and her dietary needs, and together with Lee see if they can live as normal people. The ending gives a real twist. I would like to give it four stars, but I feel I just can’t, as it is a nice movie but not a great movie. Yes, there is plenty of blood.

Ummm... Wow? Not a good wow.
I think this is another one of those movies that was an artistic bet between two millionaires. "You won't have that movie! Oh yes I will!"This reminds me of a movie that was built completely off of the ending. They want to make you "feel", but they want you to tell your friends about how "deep" your feeling on the movie was. It's less entertaining, more artistic, but the kind of artistic where the "artistry" is in the shock value of the fact that the artist was willing to blend to live goldfish and paint with their remains. Is this movie interesting? No. Is this movie engaging? Nope, not that either. It's a story that brings you in for a second and you're like, "can thisactually be good?" Unfortunately by the time you realize it is not good, the movie is over and you are wishing you could chew your own arm off instead... No pun intended. My son, who is a very different generation than I am, really wanted to see this. When it ended, he said, "that can't be the ending? Oh my God dad, I am so sorry we watched that." I said it was just good to spend time with him, but what I meant was, "I thought this was a zombie movie, but it was not, and it was truly terrible."Maybe I've curbed your expectations and you will enjoy it. But set your bar low, really low. The story was stale, the acting was ok, and the premise was literally born on the planet of uninteresting, smack dab in the middle of the waste of time galaxy. I guess a bargain bin Sally Field look alike made an appearance and that was interesting for 30 seconds. If I had the budget these people had, I would truly make a much better movie and I literally have no training.

Superior Acting and Directing
I'm 57 years old. It's been years since I've seen a brand new movie that is outstanding. This one floored me. It's MAGNIFICENT. The two young lead actors, Timothee and Taylor both have an amazing future in front of them in Cinema because these two displayed a level of acting ability that is far above anything else out that is out there right now. I loved their chemistry, humanity and frailty as they struggle to find a place in society for them. I cried my eyes out at the ending (won't spoil it) and it was all so emotional, so raw because of the astounding talent of these two actors. The music soundtrack is amazing too! Can't recommend this movie enough. I've seen it 3 times and I know I will be watching it again.

Lirico e struggente
