We're talking OLD polyester type curtains. I hated the color but don't have tons of money for new ones. Believe it or not, they're still in great shape just faded. Well, they're now a nice medium blue which is better than before. I had to use the hot water method. I think boiling them on the stove might have made them darker so I'm not blaming Rit at all. I'm just glad they're bluer than before. I picked out a nice design and it covered the stain. **Q: How many ounces of dye does one box make?** A: I used 3 gallons of water, per instructions **Q: Is this a hand wash or machine wash dye?** A: You can do it either way but it can stay in your washer for a while. I do it in the sink snd then bleach my sink. Once I have rinsed several times I put my things in the washer and run through a full cycle. Then I use a washer cleaner solution to get all the dye out of my washer. **Q: Do I need to buy a color dye fixative with this powder version ?
