Rafael Kubelik was the greatest Czech conductor of the second half of the Twentieth Century (even though he was absent from Czechoslovakia for most of this time).He was appointed to the conducting staff of the Czech Philharmonic in 1936, and was Music Director from 1942 to 1948.In 1948, he went into exile following the Communist takeover of his homeland.During this exile from Czechoslovakia, he was Music Director of:-- the Chicago Symphony (1950-53), recorded by Mercury Records-- Covent Garden Opera (1955-1958)-- Bavarian Radio Symphony (1961-1979), recorded by Deutsche Grammophon (in this box).Kubelik relinquished his position as Music Director of the Bavarian Radio in 1979, but continued to make recordings with the orchestra until his retirement in 1985.(with the end of the Cold War in 1990, Kubelik came out of retirement for an emotional series of farewell concerts with the Czech Philharmonic).PACKAGING & SOUND;64 CDs + 2 DVDs in modified “original jacket” format: original artwork on the front, track listings on the back, packaged in a convenient CD-sized box, with 120 page booklet.No texts or translations for the vocal works. Rafael Kubelik - The Complete Recordings On Deutsche Grammophon
Having released their 23 disc Rafael Kubelik Symphony Edition in 2014, some collectors may be disconcerted to find so much duplicated in DG’s newer, bigger Kubelik Complete Edition. Besides the well known Beethoven, Schumann, Dvorak and Mahler series that appeared in the earlier box, we now have a further 41 discs plus 2 DVDs , and these are helpfully and comprehensively listed on this site by the excellent John Fowler.Nevertheless, I have found this handsome set to be one of the most rewarding of the large boxes bought to market by Universal in recent years. For me it sits alongside the outstanding Ferenc Fricsay and Georg Solti Chicago sets; comparison with the latter, where pieces are shared, invariably concludes me to a personal preference for the Kubelik performances , and that reflects what I recall from the concert hall. At the time of the original release of much of this material, there was a tendency amongst English speaking critics to damn some of Kubelik’s work with faint praise. “Poetic”, “lightweight”, “fresh” , that sort of thing. He may not have been showy but there is an integrity, generosity, and spontaneity about this work, coupled, in this release, with some outstanding orchestral and solo playing and singing and fine recording. And divided violins. These are not lightweight alternatives, but central and almost entirely desirable versions.I would pick out some of the big choral works as deserving of re-evaluation-the Gurrelieder, the Glagolitic Mass, the Dvorak Stabat Mater, the Mahler Second and above all the Mahler Eighth. Solti [for example] may have arguably finer soloists and a more supercharged approach, but Kubelik finds the humour and intimacy of this piece, qualities that so often elude its more barnstorming interpreters . A lakeside inspiration as intimate, natural and personal as the Siegfried Idyll [incidentally one of the jewels of this collection, languid and pellucid]. As well as the mainstream repertoire, this box also affords the opportunity to hear Kubelik directing Hartmann, Pfitzner, Martinu, some relatively rare Orff [not for me, that one] and his own fascinating composition Quattro forme per archi.Rafael Kubelik’s rare and profoundly musical intelligence make this a set deserving of the strongest recommendation, especially if purchased in conjunction with the EMI Icon edition-and if you can find it, his implacable, searingly urgent Asrael on Panton.

Superb
I have a few of the works on LP already (Ma Vlast, four other symphonic poems, Berg and Martinon violin concertos and the Schoenberg Gurrelieder), but buying this set was one of the best investments I have made. The recordings are superb and I am given to understand from the BBC Summer CD review that there had been no need of remastering, which shows one why DG have long been a leader in quality recordings (some of which date to the 1960s). In the week or so since I received the set, I have not, of course, heard all of the discs, but "dipping" in here and there I have not been anything less than delighted with the production. No libretti for the operas or choral works, but they can be had from the internet. There are two DVDs as well.I strongly recommend this set and would advise anyone to snap it up as soon as possible - before Amazon notice the absurdly low price (just over a £1 per disc)!

Solid recordings and performances; a few stand-outs
As I built an LP (and later, CD) collection, the only Kubelik disc I remember buying was Dvorak's New World Symphony, which I thought was the best reading I had heard. Most of the rest of Kubelik's recordings I was not collecting, as most of his focus was on opera, something I was not into as a younger person, or they were works I already had in my collection with other conductors. There were a few additional LPs and CDs picked up of his, but the vast majority of his output I was ignorant of, but this box set shows me what I was missing!Bundled in roughly composer alphabetical order in this box set, there's 64 CDs plus 2 DVDs in the package. All discs are in cardboard sleeves with the original artwork on the front and a track listing on the back. An included booklet has more track info plus a short commentary on the conductor. These discs are not remastered, as far as I can tell by comparison with LP or CD earlier editions. Still, these are DG recordings throughout, so the quality of the engineering is high: even on the oldest recordings here, you don't feel as though you're missing much in terms of dynamics, soundstaging, or frequency response. If you have picked up some of the other DG boxes recently released (such as the Kempff box, or the Boston Symphony box) you will find some duplication across the boxes.As for the music, well, it's excellent. I started with the operas (Oberon, Rigoletto, and Lohengrin) and, while I only have a passing familiarity with these works, was impressed by both the interpretation and the audio quality. A good friend, who is a real opera afficionado, loves these recordings. There's the Pfitzner Palestrina work, which I had not heard before (at least I don't remember it!). But the majority of the box, the orchestral recordings, were what I wanted to really sit and listen to. What struck me through most of the disks was how controlled the music sounded, with Kubelik having the reins for the orchestra better than many other conductors. The Mahler symphonies have generated quite a variety of comments in various media sources, some quite negative while some quite positive. I worked through them all and found them solid, although not ground-breaking interpretations. Solid Mahler is the best description I can apply. You also get all the Dvorak Symphonies, including the excellent interpretation of the New World. There's the complete set of Beethoven symphonies, too.There's no single radical recording here, just a set of well-recorded works that stand the test of time (such as the Beethoven symphony tempii, which are not fast like most of today's recordings, but not ponderously slow, either). Across all the discs, there's nothing disappointing, with every piece performed thoughtfully and well. A nice box set, well worth the cost.

Fantastic set! Right off the bat
Fantastic set! Right off the bat, two of the finest recorded symphonic cycles are included in this box - the Dvorak and Mahler. The Schumann is right up there too, as is the Beethoven. Then, moving past those sets that it is likely most collectors have, there is a wealth of Czech works, some well known, others rarely performed live in this country. Love it, love it! So many old favorites, plus so much new music (for me), all under the baton of one of the great conductors of the 20th Century. It is a testament to Kubelik that a good number of these recordings were in my grandfather's LP collection, so an added bonus is reveling in the original artwork which brings back such fond memories.

Dg continue à éditer son prestigieux fonds de catalogue..
Deutsche Grammophon a bien compris le filon actuel à exploiter, de gros coffrets avec pochettes d'origine... Voici le coffret Kubelik, un peu plus modeste que les Karajan, Bernstein ou Solti, mais quand même conséquent (64 cd). L'agencement du coffret, certes joli et compact, est bizarre et peu pratique pourtant.Kubelik, c'est une direction lumineuse, vive, colorée, toujours excellente. Les orchestres sous la direction de ce chef ne sont jamais écrasants. Il n'y a aucune déception dans ce coffret : on pourra préférer telle autre version par un autre grand chef, mais jamais, du moins c'est mon sentiment, on dira ah c'est décevant, c'est trop lourd, c'est raté, etc. Les prises de sons sont toutes stéréo de la grande époque Deutsche Grammophon 60/70.il est toutefois dommage que les quelques enregistrements Decca du chef ne soient pas dans ce coffret (je pense notamment au Freischütz avec Behrens). Pour 5/6 disques de plus, c'est assez mesquin, ce n'est pas la première fois que dg fait le coup (le coffret vocal Böhm dg qui oubliait de manière assez honteuse le ring Philips et la chauve souris decca).Decca et Dg appartenant à Universal, ce n'était pourtant pas bien difficile à faire...On retiendra de ce coffret plusieurs excellentes intégrales symphoniques (Beethoven, Dvorak, Mahler, Schumann).L'intégrale Mahler, l'une des premières en stéréo, si ce n'est la première, est toujours une référence. C'est un plaisir d'ailleurs de la voir, de l'écouter avec les pochettes d'origine reproduisant des oeuvres de Klimt.Beaucoup de musique slave (Dvorak, Smetana). L'intégrale des symphonies de Dvorak est toujours considérée comme une référence dans le répertoire.L'intégrale des symphonies de Beethoven est originale (un orchestre différent par symphonie, en fonction du format/registre de la symphonie).L'intégrale Schumann est aussi toujours l'une des meilleures, évitant la surcharge pondérale romantique de Karajan ou de Bernstein.Je regrette d'ailleurs que ce chef, si à l'aise dans Smetana, Dvorak ou Schumann, n'ait pas enregistré de Brahms. Trois très bons opéras sont présents dans le coffret, Rigoletto avec Dfd, Bergonzi et Scotto (superbe, à connaître), Obéron de Weber (enregistrement de référence, mais on est à des années lumière du Freischütz quant au génie) et Lohengrin avec Janowitz, et King (une version bien équilibrée que j'ai toujours trouvée de qualité) .Il y a aussi des opéras plus difficiles d'accès ou du moins plus confidentiels, ce qui rend le coffret intéressant (Palestrina de Pfitzner, dans un style très post wagnerien, et Oedipe le tyran de Orff).Enfin, les Gurrelieder de Schoenberg sont à connaître, dans une version qui a fait date et qui était difficilement trouvable.
