“「フォークロア」の姉妹盤”とテーラー自身が呼ぶ、9作目の新作。“森の端までたどり着いて、もっと深く音楽の旅路をしたいと思い、森に戻っていくような”気持ちになって、初めて二部作形式のアルバムを作ったそうです。サウンド的には前作と同じくアメリカーナが主体ですが、13からのオルタナティブとのハイブリッドな楽曲群がもたらす静かだが確かな勢いに、僕は心地よく飲み込まれていきました。 モダンなアメリカーナの1、アルペジオの音色の持つ美しさが、瞬時に新たな世界を開く。アルコール依存を歌う2の歌詞に、エルヴィスの「Blue Suede Shoes」が一瞬透けて見える。“one for the money, two for the show”、でも“three to get ready”と奮い立つのではなく、“ I never was ready”と寂しく別れを見送る。6はHAIMのコーラスの美しさと、妻殺しを匂わすエグい歌詞のギャップが強烈。薄いヴェールを幾重にも纏っていくようなアンサンブルが美しい10も、ゴシックな歌詞を読みながら聴くと大きな影を感じる。13はポリスの「Synchronisity Ⅱ」のようなループも、さりげないストリングスもカッコイイ。14では、インダストリアルなループとレトロなコンピュータサウンドの無機質さと、アコPとBに乗せたゆるやかな歌声を一緒に聴いていると、身体の奥底で不穏な何かがギシギシ鳴っているように感じる。齢を重ねることへの優しいまなざしを感じさせる歌の17。ループにレディオヘッドの「Burn The Witch」が頭をよぎる。どうにも、一筋縄ではいかない楽曲ばかりで、前作から短期間でのリリースに不安を感じていたのは、見事に杞憂でした。 インナースリーヴには、モノクロ写真と歌詞がキレイにレイアウト。聴くほどに味わいが深くなる力作です。 1.
