Even though it did shave the ice pretty fine there was always small chunks that made every bite crunchy. If you don't mind it being somewhat crunchy you will probably like it. If you want it like you get in Hawaii you'll have to do what I did and get a machine the the ones they use over there. I bought a fujiyama, expensive but awsome. **Q: Approximately how many cones does each "block" of ice make?** A: It will make about 2 1/2 small ones and very small ones but perfect size for 5 and under. There is about 1/4 of an inch of ice that the machine can't shave at the end for whatever reason. So you will have a thin piece at the end that you will not be able to use. **Q: Can I use my own ice cubes?** A: Absolutely. I bought an ice machine to make my own cubes- which works very well. I usually forget to make them, though, so I pick up a big bag of ice at the gas station when I'm out. I use a 2 bowl method. I fill up one with ice, put half into the machine with another to catch the ice (I'm not a fan of snow cones. I just eat the ice shaved plain). Once that's done, I shave the remaining ice. The standard size dinner bowl is too wide to sit securely on its own, but I make it work and have no problems at all. Then I put a soup cup down to collect melted ice. When you use ice cubes, you have a lot of left over ice that's not tall enough to be shaved. The bigger the cubes, the fluffier the ice.
