Grannie, Prairie and Ivy seem like real people that I would like to spend time with. I admire Prairie's self-confidence and creativity as well as her enthusiasm and her kindness. I wish she had been around when I was a child as she is a refreshing female role-model. The story deals with the ordinary problems that children encounter and also with problems that are extremely challenging. Prairie and her friend Ivy are sometimes confused and even heartbroken, but they display resilience, courage and grace, in response to their very human challenges. I have heard that publishers are often hesitant to publish books that deal with real and sometimes harsh issues because they believe that children can't handle them and do not want to read about them. The reality is that there are thousands of real children who must handle these harsh problems and I believe that most children are interested in reading about them in fiction. It seems to me that it is more likely to be adults who white-wash and dance around difficult issues, than it is to be the children they say they are trying to protect. This would be a good book for a parent and child to take turns reading to each other, as some of the issues that arise could produce stimulating conversations.Prairie is an inspiring character and then there is Grannie. She is a wise,delightful older woman who enriches the lives of those around her. It is refreshing to see a character who is a "senior citizen" presented as a vital and interesting human being.Did I mention the lovely descriptions and writing in this book? I see that many of the reviews go into that aspect of the book, so I will refrain. I have to say that I found the descriptions of the chickens and their care and feeding to be fascinating.One book that I loved when I was growing up, and remember with fondness is "Harriet the Spy". I still love Harriet as if she were my friend, and now I have 3 new friends, Prairie, Ivy and Grannie ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Prairie beings heart-felt friendship *by J***E on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 25, 2014* Prairie Evers is a stranger in a strange land. She is vibrantly different from her peers--even her name is a novelty to her classmates. A new-found friend soon brings her more than just a sense of place. A perfect setting intertwines the roles of family and friendship creating a irreplaceable bond between characters.This young-adult novel is a great read. My 10 year old and 6 year old were immersed in the story and continually were wondering what was going to happen next to Prairie. My 10 year old particularly connected with the characters, as he was also moving to a new school at the time. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys young-adult fiction. It should be a required read in elementary school as many students are faced with the same issues as the heroine.
