More options...more power!!
FAT RAT REVIEWI recently asked my friends to help me decide between replacing my broken Rat ii with another Rat ii, or upgrade to the Fat Rat. The Fat Rat won. I ordered it, got it, played it, and here are my thoughts. (It's amazing!)The chassis is larger than the original, so that might be the only negative aspect for some people. I had space on my board, so no problem for me.The Rat sound is iconic, and I love it on my board. I wondered if I'd miss the original sound. Bonus: I can have an OG Rat pedal by leaving it in stock positions both ways. Win.The Fat mode opens the bottom end, especially in 18v. Win! (I play through a clean Marshall valvestate, and stereo to a Crate Bass amp.)The 18v (as opposed to the optional 9v) also helped deliver more crunch, so HUGE win. (I use the MXR iso brick for power that offers both options.) If you're not supplying 18v, you're missing out!For my ears, I don't hear a huge difference between stock and mosfet, so that's a wash. My friends insist that the mosfet option smooths the sound out, but I preferred the gritty highs of the original sound - and the 18v makes it extra crispy. After adjusting the settings to my taste, I landed at:-Distortion: 12 o'clock-Filter: 8 o'clock-Volume: 1 o'clock-Fat mode (left side)-Stock mode (right side)Extra bonus: was when I stacked this with my Boss BD-2. It was amazingly HUGE and chuggy!! Big win.(I didn't have this experience with my Rat ii.)Is it worth $100 more?I think so. I like it a lot better than the Rat ii.

It's a legendary pedal for a reason.
Great sound, with a variety of switches and knobs to tweak around to shape your tone. A bit big so you might have a harder time squeezing it into a board but it's worth making the room for, IMHO.

Dented product
Arrived on time but has a big ding on the side. Sad.

Best option to whiteface.
I own 4 whiteface rats and a WF reissue. Been using them since 83 as a full time musician. I only use rat pedals for soloing. I always wanted more headroom and perhaps more bass or "filter" as they call it. This solves the problem, as it will run from 9-18 volts. I use a 12 v supply on it, and do not need the "fat" switch as the headroom allows for lower frequencies. Natural compression, socketed IC (installed a well used LM308N), and LED (what the WF has been missing). This will be a classic. Its taller than the WF rat, so you may miss the switch on stage a couple of times before you get used to it.

A classic
You have a 303? Love distortion? This. Is. It. Hardfloor pedal of choice, albeit this one is a tad more fat. Nothing wrong with that.

Distortion Pedal - Must have
Been buying distortion pedals and finally the search is over. Lows and highs are pronounced clearly. Added my existing tube screamer before distortion and I knew from my strum that this was it. The knobs were on factory preset of 12 o'clock position when I first tried it and it was already an awesome tone. Of course, I had to tweak it to my likings. Would recommend this FATRAT pedal to anyone.

buy in-store and check out fully before purchase
It's a popular item with guitarists, but if you order online you'll find it comes with no power cable or 9v battery. In my case I had to order the power cable separately and wait a few days, only to find the unit was defective and did not work. This is not my first pedal... Then I had to get in the car and drive the item to a UPS center since I had nothing else to do.
