Sequential Spelling 1: Teacher's Guide

Ideal program for struggling spellers
This is an ideal way to teach spelling to students who have a hard time remembering what they studied and the root or base portion of words. after working with the word each day they repetition seems to come so much easier for recall later. Very happy with this system. The manual is essential to use this program.

Surprisingly good. Easy to use.
This curriculum looks at teaching spelling in a different - and in my opinion better - way. Instead of the drill-and-kill, practice all week for a test on Friday method, you take a "test" each day. We no longer even call them tests because they are more of a process whereby kids learn from their errors, and calling it a test made my daughter more anxious over spelling words incorrectly. The daily lessons are simple to give. We do 4 per week. Read the word. Use it in a sentence. Say the word again. Have the child write the word. Spell it for them on the board (or paper next to them, etc - so long as they can see it) and let them correct their work. Repeat. There are 25 word per lesson after the first few, which are a bit shorter.I created "spelling paper" for my 1st grader using this, rather than buying the student book. I think it would be cheaper to buy the student book than print all those pages, but her writing ability requires slightly bigger lines. This has also doubled as handwriting practice for us. One side benefit is that she has realized how important it is to write legibly so she can correct her own work. :)I do realize that the author suggests starting this around 2nd grade, so in that age bracket the lines in the student book may work well.As a whole we are loving our spelling lessons. They are fairly quick and it is nice for both of us to see improvement daily and to see the connections between the words in the lesson, as the progressively base upon the previous words.

helpful spelling curriculum
We chose this book to use for homeschooling after reading many reviews about it being good for helping struggling spellers. I liked the word lists but felt they were a little much for one week of words so I use half a list per week and then we go back and review later in the month. My kids like the way the words flow together and helps them make sense of the spelling. I would recommend this book to others and plan on using it on into next year. it has plenty of words in it I think to use with struggling readers for a longer period of time.

Pleasantly Surprised!
I chose to purchase the Sequential Spelling Curriculum for my two boys after seeing good reviews from other homes hooping parents. When I received the books though I have to admit I was disappointed by the content but figured we would give it a shot. The kids love it! I'm so glad I didn't just send it back, they are actually enjoying and the whole IDE of spelling in word families instantly clicked with them the very first day! Don't be discouraged by the simplicity of it...my kids balk at any kind of "school" but both are having a great time with these books!

My kids love spelling and this book makes teaching them very enjoyable
My kids love spelling and this book makes teaching them very enjoyable. Low pressure....no lists for them to memorize. Encourages kids to think rather than regurgitate information. Our family uses small white boards....they love writing the words down and are eager to hear the next word. I like that each word builds on the previous word. I also like the inclusion of homophones.

All you need is the Teacher’s Guide, Revised Edition.
Don’t waste your money on the Student Workbook. You don’t need it.
