Q: do the speakers have to be placed on a stand???

I think you will get the best sound from these excellent speakers placed on stands that are 2-3 feet from the wall behind them. That said, they are bookshelf speakers that will produce acceptable music reproduction against a wall, but will need the foam baffles placed in the rear facing ports. If you can swing the stands, that is the way to go.
