Too important for words ...
Simply one of the most important films in the history of British cinema, this kaleidoscopic masterwork has to be see to be believed. And then seen again to understand its greatness. As for the Blu Ray, all previous issues with the soundtrack have been resolved and the image pops. Essential.

More than a gangster filem
Its almost easier to define this film negatively - that is by what it is not: It's not a gangster film; it's not a film about rock stars in the London of the 'swinging sixties'; it's not social realism and it's not a vehicle for any of the 'celebrities' who just happen to appear in it's cast. This film is a beautifully constructed work of art that transcends narrow classification, with a narrative that challenges our very perception of ourselves as unitary beings in a space-time universe; it forces us to ask questions about our psychic continuity and questions our 'common sense' notions of self/other.How does it do this? well Performance achieves it's goals through a dazzling display of psychedelic and mythical symbolism - the sheer creative power of which carries the film beyond it's genre, and the veiwer beyond the limitataions of his or hers rational mind. When we compare this visionary work to the current productions from Hollywood and elsewhere it is like receiving a message from another universe! There is no comparison. This is a unique work. Just don't expect a hollywood ending. This film is an enigma.

A heady mix of mobsters and mushrooms.
One of the great all time "cult" movies, this still potent mix of gangsters,drugs,bi-sexuality and identity works on many levels, with its treasure trove of literary references, coupled with a great visual "psychedelic"style superbly realised by Nic Roeg, one of the great British cinematographers.Hugely controversial in its day,it appalled the Warner Bros executives, who were not keen to release it at all! if it had not been for Mick Jagger, who,in the role of Turner, retired rock star turned recluse was hugely anticipated both by the music and "underground" press at the time. So it was eventually released, substantially cut,due to outrage, not only from the studio but also the censor. It was an immediate "cult" hit, powerful and violent.with its ambiguous sexuality and psychedelic references, featuring a great soundtrack,Jagger singing "Memo from Turner",almost a prototype music video. also Ry Cooder's first contribution to a soundtrack. Co Directed by Roeg and Donald Cammell "Performance" remains an absolute classic, this Blu-Ray version is very good, one of the less"cut" versions.Highly recommended.

Performance Blu-ray review
I'm not going to review the film itself as most fans will know what it's about. I'll just review the disc. The picture quality for a film which is 44 years old is in superb condition. No dirt, scratches or debris. The master Warners have used is ace. The missing line "Here's to old England" during the famous Memo From Turner scene is back intact which was missing from the 2007 DVD.The extras are the same as the DVD. The Blu-ray is region free. It is highly recommended for fans of this film.

Hippy meets gangland
This is almost arthouse underground. It has it all sex, drugs, violence, rock and roll. I have watched this a few times over teh years and it would not be made these days.

Claustrophobic Period Piece
with real atmosphere. The simple plot is not the point. It is the alternative meanings of the word Performance. Jagger is a really good actor, in this role anyway. The only remaining question is how such a good actor as James Fox could have sprogged such an idiot son as Laurence?!?
