All the negative reviews are understandable only if you don’t understand how this thing works. No, pulling it apart and assuming everything is equi-distant is not realistic because it has moving parts and you are pulling with different tension, but each section is adjustable! Pull it as wide as needed then lay it down and adjust using a ruler, once all the points line up you can tape it with a strip of painters tape, flip and put the tape on the back. This locks the points in place. FOR THE PRICE it is awesome. A more expensive one might perform perfectly without needing to check against a ruler. This saves me a lot of time marking long borders or matching seam points on quilts I make. I love it!!!

My thought was to use this to layout evenly-spaced screws when building wood cabinets (with no math). It can still serve that purpose but I’ll have to be careful - the individual “legs” don’t necessarily space evenly as you pull it to the required length.Would buy again (but would still need to futz around with the spacing).

I purchased this for sewing as a button guide, pleating guide, etc. However, as a mixed media artist I have also used it for easily laying out art projects into thirds (rule of three) - no measuring needed! I have also used it to divide a canvas into equal segments (usually fifths), and again, no measuring needed. My husband is eyeing it for his leather work, and I am thinking it might work well in jewelry making to make sure an element is repeated at regular intervals when using unusual and irregular materials. Just super handy for creatives.

Got this for my mom who’s loves to sew but hates dealing with buttons. She uses this every time she needs to sew buttons now and she said it saves her a ton of frustration!

I was skeptical that this tool would really be any easier or faster than using a ruler it really is. I'm glad I took the chance. I also haven't had issues with it not opening evenly like some other people have. I'm sure it can happen but if it does you should probably contact the seller and let them know because that is not how they all work.
