Excellent printer - photos wonderful, loves to eat ink
I gave this top stars even though it is an ink hog. BUT before you stop reading, when pro to g photos on “ best” as I often do, very few printers are not! For a home office this is spectacular. It’s very compact, it comes with an automatic document feeder, which is very RARE in this price range. Faxes ( YES, some still use faxing), scans, copies. Got good Consumer Report scores.I have seen negative reviews. Mostly on flimsy construction, cost of ink and slowness of printer. Ok I disagree. Why? Yes, the plastic made in this Pixma is not a thick as printers of years past but that said, it doesn’t make one bit of difference! Unless you are particularly rough it will NOT affect ANY functions. I LOVE that this has TWO paper holders. I love that unlike my last non Cannon printer, this DOES co it is to print when other cartridges are out of ink. That’s a big deal for me!!! Again hard to find anymore in this price range AND I paid $ $70 more in December 2020 than its being sold at many internet stores now 4-20). On the cost of ink. I used the Cannon ink XL packs twice and was dismayed at putting out $120 every 46-60 days ( again I do print lots of photos). I researched non Cannon ink. In the past, I had trouble with smearing for DAYS later, color distortion, etc. I decided to try one more time and found an internet company called Comp and Save. I took a chance. The cartridges were an immediate given that this firm produced quality Non OEM ( original equipment mfg) products. The price for all 5 XL cartridges was slightly 50% less than Cannon. The real test came in my print test. I printed 4 different photo types ( landscape, portrait etc) with Cannon ink. Then printed the same photos with the Non OEM ink. IF you were looking closely, you could find a tad difference. ( Blue suit in Cannon print, came out more brown. What’s hilarious is that we NEVER noticed that the actual suit is not BLUE but brown mixed with blue weaves. Our faces were a very TINY bit lighter. I thought it made us look better to be truthful. The point is that the differences would be speculative at best, and too small to pay the full Cannon ink costs. Beautiful fall landscape? No difference! ALSO, using non manufacturer ink does NOT void any mfg warranty. Also make sure you buy from a QUALITY ink company as cheap ink does clog up printers often! BUT since these printers really don’t last like they used to, I strongly recommend you always buy the extra warranty if available. I bought my last printer at Best Buy with a 3 year extra warranty for $34.99. Thank heavens as the printer broke after 2 years. They refunded my purchase price and I bought a different printer. Bought another 3 year warranty and this printer went after 15 months. Unfortunately the Assurion Warranty I bought from Amazon does not refund your money but only gives you an Amazon gift card. None the less, still worth buying with electronics and are really inexpensive these days.

Install hell. Printer heaven.
I like the printer. I appreciate the smaller size. I replaced a MX922 that died with an error B200. While the 922 was easier to install and use, it overpowered the small space I have. Like others, I had a very difficult time installing this printer on Windows 7. It installed without any difficulty on my Windows XP machine. Directions are basically useless for the novice installer. Installing the drivers was the problem. Consistent errors when the driver zip file tried to unpack using the install CD. I tried manually downloading them and still received errors. Finally I used Win Zip to manually unpack the file. After the files were unpacked everything installed ok. Even the CD now ran without error. I have not tried to connect wireless yet. I have one printer connected via Ethernet cable and one connected via USB. Both are working good. Print quality is great. This one moves at the same speed the 922 did. I haven't done photos yet and will comment later when I do. I am at a loss on how to print envelopes, there is no directions anywhere on how to do this although the tray has an image of an envelope - so I assumed it can do them. No mention online or in the manual about it. So, while I would give the install one star, I give the printer 5 stars. Also-do not expect Ink Jet printers to last more than two years, especially if you use aftermarket ink.

Easy - but not fast - install, so far, so good
This is my 4th or 5th Canon printer. I've always been disappointed with every other printer I've had, especially the user interface of the software, so I've stuck with Canon. This printer is replacing my MX892, which experienced the B200 error. After all the great things I've heard about Canon support, I was really disappointed this time. But regardless, I purchased this new printer, and it was easy to set up. I chose the download method because I was registering multiple devices. It went smoothly, but took about an hour to complete. I had read in another review about the default setting that does not allow the printer to turn on automatically when you print, so I made sure I found that setting and changed it. This printer has a much smaller footprint than my MX892, but the control panel does stick out a bit awkwardly when you raise it to the operational position. And the print tray is no longer a tray, just a narrow thing that extends out to support the paper when it comes out. And flimsy? OMG, is this thing flimsy compared to previous models. But I guess that's how they get the cost down, and as long as it sits in my router room and nobody bumps it, it won't matter. I've printed and it seems fast and quiet and good. I haven't scanned with it, yet. Those are my two most-used functions, so I will update when I've used it more. But let me address the support issue, because I think it is egregious. The B200 fault tells you to turn off your printer, unplug it, and call support. Of course, it was a Sunday, so I searched for the fault online. The only viable fix I found was to remove all of the print cartridges, remove the print head, reinstall the print head, reinstall the print cartridges, and leave it unplugged for at least 5 minutes. When I did this, the fault went away. But when I tried to print, the fault returned. So on Monday, I called support. The automated line has a woman's voice that is very loud and fast and will not let you interrupt it. She prompts you to speak, but then immediately talks for another 30 seconds. I was finally able to get to the point where she knew my model number and said she would transfer me to someone who could help. Then promptly hung up on me. I tried again. Same thing. I tried a third time, pressing 0 repeatedly until a human came on the line. I explained what had happened. His response? "Yes, that's because this model is at end-of-service life and is no longer supported. Have you gone to our website?" What? You tell me my only option is to call support, and when I do, your planned response is to hang up on my? So out in trash goes my old MX892. Let's hope my TR8520 lasts longer than the three years my now end-of-service life MX892 served me.
