Marvel Studio's Iron Man 3 [DVD]

Iron Man in Extremis
First up: will the people who will vote this review as being unhelpful please explain why they find it so when they do. Thank you.Second: This sees the film debut of a villain from Iron Man comics called the Mandarin. But a man with mystic powers doesn't quite fit into the style of these films. So the character has been somewhat altered. In a way that may not please some comic book fans. You have been advised. But never having read an Iron Man comic in my life;I don't care! And neither will others who haven't read one either. But who enjoy these movies. And they, at the end of the day, are in the majority.DVD specifics:Languages: English, Flemish. French.Subtitles: English, Arabic Bulgarian, Croatian, Dutch, Greek, Slovenian, French. The disc begins with lots of trailers and adverts. Which can be skipped by pressing the next chapter button on the dvd remote control. All these trailers and adverts appear in the sneak peeks section of the dvd anyhow. The only extras are:'Exclusive behind the scenes look at Thor: The Dark World.' Which is a one minute long promotional feature of clips and talking heads for the forthoming Thor sequel. It's short, but it does make the film look really good.'Deconstructing the scene - attack on Air Force One.' Is an eight minute long look at how one big set piece in Iron Man Three was filmed. It's pretty interesting viewing. The film itself is set sometime after the end of Marvel's Avengers Assemble [DVD ] [which you probably don't need to have seen in order to get into this. But then if you're watching this you probably will have anyhow]. It sees Tony troubled by what happened in said Avengers movie. He's not troubled by the events of the first scene, though. A flashback to a time a few years before when he got involved with an engimatic lady and gave a nerdy inventor the brush off. But perhaps he should be... [as the narratation makes clear].When trying to deal with ruthless international terrorist the Mandarin [Ben Kingsley] Tony finds his world under attack. And without much of he relies on, he has to use his ingenuity to survive. And strike back. Can he bring The Mandarin to justice? And find the truth about some horrifying experiments? This is the 'hero gets knocked down and starts to doubt themselves, can they find their way back up?' movie plotline. But then there are, as someone once said, only so many stories. The familarity shouldn't put you off.It doesn't have to tie into any other Marvel movie or set things up. So the focus can be firmly on Tony throughout. Which allows for it to be a strong character pic. There does come a point once we're past all the set up when it really clicks. There's good character interaction. Fun dialogue. Even a smart kid character never gets annoying. Good humour. And a plot with a few decent twists and turns. Plus a pretty good villain.Big set pieces are more than adequate and pretty spectacular with it. Although the final set piece is perhaps one too many, but that's only a minor complaint. It tries to round off the Iron Man Trilogy and bring closure to a lot of things, and it succeeds in doing that. Whilst not entirely closing the door for more [since the money men wouldn't be happy if he wasn't in the Avengers sequel, after all].Everything a blockbuster movie should be. Good escapist spectacular entertainment, and well worth 5/5.There is a scene after the credits, as is common with these movies. But unlike most it doesn't actually set up anything for any future films. But it's still worth a look.

Good entertainment with a few story line flaws
I’m not a hugely interested in super hero movies but our youngest is a big fan of the theme. And I must admit the movies are generally good entertainment for the family during our weekly 'movie-nights'. Even my wife, who is mostly into chick flicks has started to develop an interest. So we’ve watched the 3 Iron Man movies with our children, 7 and 9 years old. The first two on blu ray that we still had at hand. This 3rd we bought on Prime. The 3rd Iron Man instalment has more shocking moments than the others. So with the youngest it was slightly scary a couple of times but he slept well after it. His older sister, who likes the reasonably gruesome Lord of the rings and Hobbit movies, somehow struggled more with this movie, the red eyed veterans in particular. She had a nightmare about them the night after we watched it.But as said, it’s good entertainment, with spectacular, good quality visuals. And Tony simply remains a funny character. The digital Prime version was perfect. The first thing I should say however is that we decided to watch the 3 Iron man movies in sequence. This worked well with the first 2 but in this 3rd instalment that are a few references to an event in New York and aliens. So we’ll now have to catch up with this through the Avenger movies I guess. Also, a more cynical note. I know it’s unwise to question potholes and plausibility in a super hero movie. But they alway got my mind racing. This time I still struggle to understand how Killian’s wounded army veterans that received traumatic injuries, and that through a breakthrough scientific experiment could regrow their lost limbs turned into some sort of evil drones. In particularly (spoiler) since Pepper Potts Was exposed to the same treatment and was still sweet as honey. Also while these veterans were able to generate 3000C heat from their body, somehow their clothes didn’t catch fire!. And, if Tony had a personal army of iron man suits at home, why didn’t he order them into action when the attack on his mansion occurred? Then by the end of the movie Tony simply decides to have surgery to remove rocket shrapnels from near his heart.. really?? - the whole second movie was about his progressive terminal condition because of this shrapnel that could not be removed!. Well, all least is gone for the 4th movie.Anyway, maybe you should think too much about such details and just enjoy the movie.

People should enjoy it for what it is
I vaguely remember the original mags back in the 60's and people who refer to this film not being true to source need to get a grip. Being pedantic and oh so superior about original material doesn't mean the critique is any more meaningful. So what, it might not stick like glue to the original concept but the technology over the last 50 years mean it can develop to fit in with audience expectations today. If we stuck to everything as it was and the 'futuristic' views of what might happen in the 60's we'd be moaning about the lack of effects and drama and how outdated the whole thing would be This film likes the others takes a fairly traditional hero and puts him into a contemporary setting. In this there are plenty (and I mean plenty) of suits flying round, lots of good bangs and special effects and some very understated humour. I enjoyed it for what it is and a lot of other folk will too. I mean lets face it were talking about a flying suit of armour here.....still a bit futuristic in itself.....its a fantasy/science fiction film so just go with the flow...and enjoy as much as the other two which I assume you have watched and enjoyed or you wouldn't be reading these reviews and thinking about buying this one to follow suit.

TRE...IL NUMERO PERFETTO !
Iron Man è una garanzia.

A worthy successor to the first film
Warning: here be spoilers.Iron Man 3 sets out to return Iron Man to his roots of dark, believable action established in the first movie, while retaining the big-spectacle adventure of Avengers. To that end we see Tony Stark face off against a peculiar new representation of the Mandarin, a snarling, ethnically nebulous terrorist ringleader portrayed by Ben Kingsly. After an exasperated Stark promises to end the Mandarin's reign of terror, the mastermind seemingly orders the destruction of Stark's house, setting him on a quest to locate the Mandarin through an entertaining combination of detective work and MacGuyver-esque trickery. Stark is opposed by an army of mysterious flunkies who have been granted superpowers by Extremis, a genetic modification originally meant to help the disabled (as opposed to military nanites as in the comic).Viewers have made much of this film's twist- that the Mandarin is in fact a puppet of the real villain, AIM director Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce), who has hired a degenerate English actor to portray a power-mad despot as part of a political misdirection. This was a polarizing twist- for those who are new to the franchise it is a clever, Shyamalan-esque turn, and for serious comic nerds, it's an unexpected twist that is not out of line with the spirit of the franchise. For many, however, the reveal that the Mandarin was not in fact his usual Ming-the-Merciless-esque self, or even real, was a huge disappointment. For me the twist worked- I was disappointed at how generic and ridiculously grimdark the Mandarin initially appeared, but the reveal that he was a fiction- and not a very bad guy in reality- was something I did not expect. One can also read the twist as something of a satire of Ben Kingsly's career, which has been heavily built on playing ethnic and foreign characters, just as his filmic alter-ego does.Another point of contention is that Iron Man spends so much of the film outside his armor. I would assert that this is important- by pitting the largely average Tony Stark against the super-powered AIM operatives who obstruct him we see him acting as a hero without the crutch of dominating technology. It makes for a refreshing reminder that under the armor there is still a hero we can root for.Although it's not as BIG of a movie as Avengers, Iron Man 3 succeeds at being a thriller, and action film, and just a bit funny all at once. It rekindles the new, fresh feel of the first movie in a way that the second missed, and develops all of its characters in entertaining, satisfying directions. Of particular note is Ty Simpkins as Harley, a bratty sidekick who attaches himself limpet-like to the unwilling Tony. I am always leery of kids in movies of this kind, but he's spot on. It's also hard to fault Shane Black, who blends 90s directorial sensibilities with modern FX and camerawork to create a movie that feels different from its predecessors and from the rest of the MCU. Among other things, Black dials back on the CG of Avengers with numerous effective practical effects (I could swear I spotted a cable when Iron Man rescues the crew of Air Force 1, though) and excellent set design and lighting throughout. Were I to complain about any part of the film, it would be the character of Tony's friend James Rhodes, AKA War Machine (Don Cheadle once again). Back when he was Terrance Howard, Rhody didn't even GET to be War machine, and he was only limited in the second film. Here once again the producers seem concerned that audiences will be confused by the presence of two Iron men, as War Machine spends most of his time out-of-scene, and participates in the climax out of his armor. I love Cheadle's take on the character, and would have loved to see him get a better part as what we DO see is well in line with the character as he appears in other media.PROS:-Unique direction makes for a film that feels genuinely different from the other coming attractions-Good acting from a pretty diverse cast of characters-Recaptures the feel of the first Iron ManCONS:-Editing is sloppy in some places-Soundtrack is not particularly memorableFINAL THOUGHTS:Iron Man 3 is a worthwhile entry in MCU canon, and its departures from the comics are justifiable as part of building the film.
