Comes with #10 Ultra Edge blade. This gives a 1/16 inch cut. Use the Wahl Professional Animal Stainless Steel Attachment Guide Comb's for detachable blades. Work great. No they do not come with a guard but it does have two speeds, low and high

The blades will naturally get hot from use, and the speed also affects how fast they heat up. If yours is a 2 speed try using the slower speed. Also, you may wish to have a second set of blades so you can periodically change the blades out to allow them to cool down during extended periods of use. This will also help them last longer.

Either are fine. I have the Andis 22340 and using the Andis UltraEdge Detachable Clipper Blade 3 3/4 skip tooth it cuts extremely well on the tight knit poodle fur. Just use short strokes when cutting because as with any dog the longer your cut the more prone it is to get caught.
