Beautifully Illustrated and Easy to Follow
Although I am not a child aged 6-12, my skill level is that of one. LOL This book is so easy to follow and read. There is a list of preferred products (ie: paints, brushes, etc.) that I also plan on investing in.

Kids love it!
I'm the "art teacher" for some home-schoolers. I'm a pretty good artist with no clue how to teach art to my children. Knowing and teaching are two different things! This book gave me some good ideas and processes. The kids loved it!

uses a kids' system, not the Bob Ross method on used his tv show
This is a review of Painting with Bob Ross for Kids: With these simple-to-follow lessons, in no time you'll be painting just like television's favorite painter, Bob Ross [paperback] This paperback offers 10 painting lessons for kids, all are nature scenes (snow, waves, trees . . . ). A lot of useful techniques are introduced, such as using a base coat, mixing colors, adding highlights, applying paint with a palette knife, tapping the brush onto the canvas, and letting the canvas dry a bit before adding more paint. Round yellow circles indicate a painting pause. My favorite parts of the book are the focus on fun and the repeated idea that there are no mistakes, just “happy accidents.” My niece and I are using the book together; our favorite bits are the “happy trees and bushes” in the fall cabin picture and the background and trees in the snowscape. So far, we have used the book as a starting place and then done whatever we wanted; I think Bob Ross would approve of that. If you are a Bob Ross fan, you want to know that the book is written very specifically for kids and uses a different system than Bob Ross uses in his tv show. The book is careful to clarify that the instructions and acrylic paints referred to in the book “do not produce the same results you see Bob Ross do on his popular Joy of Painting show.” Both my niece and I got really tired of reading the word “kid” in front of each mention of a paint color or a paintbrush. (Children don’t usually want people to fixate on their youth.) Apparently the Bob Ross company sells (separately) a painting kit that includes the colors and brushes used in the book. On page 4, the book says you can also use any water-based acrylic paints, which is good because I already had paint brushes, palette knives, and a lot of colors of acrylic paints. These paintings use only a ‘liquid white’ base coat and 6 colors, cadmium yellow, sap green, titanium white, Van Dyke Brown, Bright red, and a blue. Which blue is a bit unclear to me. Sometimes the blue is called Prussian Blue, sometimes it is called Pthalo Blue. Those blues are very similar, but not exactly the same. Considering the book is geared toward kids, it would be more clear to use only one of those blues throughout the book. Another confusing aspect of the book is that the paint brushes in the examples do not always look like they have paint on them — at least not the correct color paint. On page 59, a useful technique is demonstrated, using a paintbrush to lightly spray white flecks onto the painting. However, the ends of the brush look green, not white. Perhaps a dirty brush was used, but that directly contradicts instructions on page 5 to make sure to clean your brushes. That green-stained fan brush shows up in other photos, so I’m thinking that maybe that brush was used more as a ‘pointer’ than showing actual painting (like pages 32 and 33, where that brush is the same color whether it is ‘demonstrating’ painting with a dark color or with white). Kids notice this stuff — my niece kept asking me about the dirty brush.Despite my frustrations with aspects of the book, it is useful and fun. The step-by-step instructions mean my niece could keep painting even when I have to step out of the room briefly. But I’ll be looking for other books that suit our tastes better.

Thanks to Quarto Publishing Group, NetGalley, and Bob Ross Inc. for the chance to absorb this incredible book. I grew up watching Bob Ross with my Dad and enjoyed his technique of painting. This book is a wonderful resource for anyone whether it’s children or adults that are interested in learning to paint. Beautiful work and this is one of those books that makes it easy for anyone interested in learning how to paint. I definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in painting
