Good ABA Run Down, May Not Work For Every Individual with Autism
As a parent of a child who has Autism, on top of a rather overwhelming laundry list of other disorders, I know why you are interested in this book- you are desperately trying to help your child. You may be going through things nobody around you can understand, and you're looking at anything that can be used to help your child have the most fulfilling future possible. And in terms of quality, this book gives an excellent run down of Applied Behavioral Analysis and how you could use this with your child. That last bit is the only reason I'm giving it 4 stars. In general, I personally prefer DIR Floortime...for our son, it is what he responds best to. All of his best gains in word approximation, eye contact, social play, and sensory improvement have all come about as a result of DIR techniques. I remember leaving the developmental pediatrician's office with a stack of reading after my son's diagnosis, and one of the books he recommended was by an MD who said that ABA is a great place to start with a child who has intellectual disability, which our son does. But you know what? It didn't take our son very long for all of his challenges at all to figure out the we were using ABA motivators to modify and direct his behavior, and it made him angry as heck. ABA is the only therapy type for Autsim covered for my son under the insurance that pays for his benefits, he pretty much has to feel in the mood to cooperate with you, because it doesn't matter how much he loves something, he loves being able to choose what he does and have control much more.So the moral of this story is, you may need to experiment with different therapy methods and find out what works best with your child individually. Because this may work great for you, or it may become a great big brick wall that your child smashes into, because ABA, as popular as it is within the therapy community, doesn't work for every individual who has Autism. The best advice I can give you is be open to the different methods. Otherwise, when it comes to ABA, if that is what truly works best for your child, this is a well put together book and system.
