Speed up the old laptop with an SSD, with care it is easy
500GB of mSATA III SSD (Solid State Drive) 860 EVO from Samsung offers a significant speed upgrade to a laptop with a decent modern i5 6k series processor and lots of RAM, but previously held back by a mere 5400rpm slim SSHD (500GB +8GB SSD Hybrid). The W7P Experience score for the storage went from 5.9 to 7.9.This mSATA may not be the fastest SSD (H2TestW gave 354MByte/s write and 357MByte/s read sustained for a test of approx 100GBytes), but then my laptop does not have an M2 slot, and while the i5 is also not the fastest cpu the real bottleneck in the laptop’s performance was the OEM whirly disc HD (the old hybrid drive tested at 123MByte/s and 126MByte/s for 100GB). It is also good policy to maximise the system RAM to minimise page swapping with the SSD, to help maximise the operational life of the SSD.With the laptop powered off and disconnected from everything, I installed the SSD in the WWAN mSATA slot on the motherboard, taking care not to inflict any ESD (Electro-Static Discharge) injury to SSD or laptop.I checked that the SSD was correctly recognised by the BIOS before doing anything further. When the PC was happy I booted the PC in Legacy mode from a known good DVD with the Acronis cloning software on it (about 512MB in all) and cloned the old HD onto the new SSD. After the operation is finished, Acronis offers us the option of shutting down the machine. It is important not to try restarting the machine with two bootable drives; they can become confused even if the BIOS order is explicit, so the old HD was removed before restarting. I renamed the CD/DVD drive as E: and then put in a new spare 1TB SSHD to be used as D: drive in the old slot where the previous C: HD lived. The boot speed is a great improvement compared with the old HD; after the usual BIOS checks the single slowest part of login is typing the password, W7P wakes up in just a couple of seconds or so. System updates are much faster, as are programs when loading themselves. Backups from the new data D: HD to external storage are much the same speed as before, but then that is the external RAID storage being the bottleneck.Be aware that this particular SSD is only a nominal 500GB and, after formatting and internal housekeeping, this leaves about 466GB, and then after W7P reserves its protected partition this leaves about 452GB for the new C: Partition. This is a useful storage upgrade for a four-year-old W7P laptop, and saves me having to buy a newer machine with fewer facilities and lumbered with W10P.

Superb performance like no other
This drive is supercharged. Look at those small file write numbers. Worth every penny. I already own Samsung EVO SATA 860 2TB for other laptops and this drive offers the same stellar performance once you have ran the Samsung Magician software and turned on all optimizations.Btw, it's is a horde to upgrade mSATA on a Samsung 9 series Ultrabook (900x3c); you need to be careful to clone the partitions exactly and the resize with care. Took several tries until OEM Windows 7 though it was "genuine" again. As that was a tedious upgrade, wish there would have been a 2TB version available.Pic 1 - on PC mSATA. All optimizations on.Pic 2 - on PC mSATE. As pluggeed. No Samsung Magician or optimizations run.Pic 3 - on USB 3.0 via external enclosure (to see how it would perform as backup drive). No optimizations possible as Samsung software only can work on motherboard AHCI attached drives.

Sits quietly & unobtrusively tucked away in the nether regions of my MoBo
Ideal as a miniature internal backup drive for Windows 10 File History/disaster recovery.I had a spare internal mSATA slot on my ASUS Maximus V Gene MoBo, at the price when purchased, this was more cost effective and simple to install than a conventional SATA SSD/HDD.Sits quietly and unobtrusively tucked away in the nether regions of my motherboard happily receiving and retaining my Windows 10 File History backups.Samsung Magician sees the mSATA drive and has recently updated the firmware, so all is good in the hood. Was looking at the cost for the 1TB version but until it drops WELL below its current retail price (over £250) am happy with the 500GB capacity available with this one.Screenshots are from Samsung Magician and CrystalDisk and photos of the card installed on the motherboard.

A good little drive, really handy for adding a second SSD to my laptop..
Works really well in my HP Folio 9470m and gives me the option of adding a second internal sdd. Getting about 550mb/s read and about 520mb/s write from the drive, so a good £68 spent I would say....

Used to Upgrade a 160gb Ipod- and it rocks!!
I was looking at upgrading my ipod 160gb and while I won't go into that process here (google it ), this has worked like a dream. The Samsung EVO range of SSDs are widely acknowledged as the best in category at the moment and this was no exception. Once fitted in the ipod (with other support kit for the project), It was formatted in Itunes recovery mode and has worked faultlessly. The capacity in the ipod is 240gb and because it is a SSD and no working parts, the battery usage is now truly sublime, along with a reduction in weight. The ssd is fast and responsive and when plugged into my car's media system, it indexes in approx 20sec (compared to 4mins with the old ipod HD).Easy packaging makes this product a dream- weather you use it like me for an ipod expansion or a PC upgrade, I can promise you that you will not be disappointed. A brilliant product !!

Fast and reliable piecec of kit from Samsung
This was a great price for one of the best mSATA SSDs available for my laptop. Installation was a breeze on my laptop. As I was migrating (using Acronis True Image) from a smaller 256GB Samsung mSATA I had to attach the unallocated space to the C partition which I did successfully after a minor hiccup where I put in the wrong settings...my fault...I found the free download of MiniTool Partition Wizard easy to use and it sorted it out for me.

Fits in mid 2012 Retina MacBook Pro with an adapter (sold separately)
Expanded the life of the best laptop I've ever owned, now doubled the storage capacity from 500gb to 1tb so I can start importing photos again! you can buy an adapter right here on amazon that will enable this ssd drive to fit in proprietary card slot note you may have to check your model if it is not a 15 inch mid 2012 retina MacBook Pro (mSATA SSD to 2012 MACBOOK PRO or Retina Adapter) Not a huge speed increase as I was already using an ssd drive but to have space again without having to spend upwards of £3500 when the laptop works perfectly is great, here's to another 6 years of use :-)
