Very nice battery-powered hydraulic punch.
This is a very nice battery-powered hydraulic puncher. I own a machine shop and have more than a dozen American-made metal punchers ranging from large and small hand-operated to medium and large stand-alone hydraulic pump-operated with punching capabilities from thin sheet metal to 1 inch thick steel plate with punches and dies to match each size and thickness. What I didn't have was a portable unit that you didn't have to drag around an hydraulic pump or tons of drop cord to use. I searched far and wide for a good portable unit but didn't want to spend thousands of dollars on a unit that may not be used enough to justify the cost. This unit is reasonably priced and that is why I decided to try it. After using it now for a couple of weeks I am pleasantly surprised by it. It is heavy but that is a good thing. The 21v batteries provide more than enough power to punch through one quarter inch steel plate repeatedly. Plus it will handle angle iron and channel iron. It makes a very clean punch in metals from 3mm to 6mm thick. It punches very fast taking only 2 to 3 seconds to punch a hole. It has a very deep throat (65mm) that allows extended placement of the punched hole. The punches and dies are of good quality, are easy to replace and spares are available from the seller (I've already bought 2 spare sets from them and they ship very fast) as are the 21v batteries. The punches, dies and batteries are all industry standard so no worries about future availability. Replacement (repair) parts are also available according to the seller. The unit came very well packed (double-boxed). The unit was in an inner box in a thick cardboard box with custom fitted foam cutouts (can be used as storage box but not practical as a carrying case). There was absolutely no shipping damage to the unit. It does not come with a carrying case but one is available from the seller. Contact the seller before purchase if you think that you need a case and they will make arrangements to get you one. I made arrangements to get the case but even though I have the case I'm finding that I seldom put my unit into it because it stands so well on its base stand and it's always ready to use that way and I'm using it very often. However, it is good to know that I have the case if needed. One good thing about the carrying case is that you don't have to remove the puncher base stand to put the unit into the case. Once installed, I've never had to remove my base plate even during hand-held puching plus it goes right into the case that way.Cons: As stated in the product description, thin metals (under 3mm) are not recommended for this puncher because the metal may be distorted during punching. This is caused by the clearances of the punch to die fit. Larger clearances are required for thicker metal (clearances of 2mm and up) and smaller clearances (1mm) for thinner metals. Since the punches and dies available for this unit have about 2mm clearance they are best used with metal thicknesses of 3mm up to 6mm. You can still punch the thinner metals but the metal may distort somewhat and you may have to use a stripper (extractor) plate to force the metal off the punch. I highly recommend using lube oil (30w motor oil works) on the punch and die. I place a small puddle of oil underneath the punch on top of the metal plate to be punched and this works well to lubricate both the punch and die during the punching process. The unit comes with a wallwart charger (1A) that is very slow (90 minutes to fully charge from a low state). The universal 21v batteries fit universal chargers so upgrading is no problem. The seller may even have more powerful chargers available. This unit appears to be new on the market and I can't speak to its longevity but it appears to be very well made. I've punched several hundred holes with it so far (both in testing and in actual production use) and it is holding up very well. The punches and dies are showing signs of usage but they just keep on punching through. The machine is actually a lot of fun to use because it is so portable (no pumps, no cords). Be careful though, you may find yourself punching things that you shouldn't be punching. You've been warned!
