Chews metal, ceramic, glass, and carborundum.
Initially, I was skeptical of Diamond Sharpening Stones and I only brought this product to flatten my whetstones, but boy was I surprised when I started using this stone. Unlike silicon carbide stones, this one is as flat as they come and those diamond like holes done on the surface are actually there to hold the water in for longer periods of time. At around 300 grit, this stone chews through metal, whetstone and ceramic with ease. A dull knife can come back to shape in no time and then be stropped on a leather belt to get a razor sharp edge. What's best is that because of the way diamonds and their hardness chew metal, this stone is a great product to sharpen garden hoes, spades and shovels. The only downside is that the metal backed by the yellow plastic is not as rock solid and is prone to flexing. However, that can easily be remedied by putting the stone on a flat surface such as the floor or a table or gluing a plank of wood to the back of this stone.

Ideal for dressing abrasive blocks to get a true surface.
I purchased this to maintain the surface of my silicon carbide combination stone, and it works admirably in that capacity.I use the combination stone to sharpen wood chisels. After a time, its surface gets uneven and that is when it has to be flattened. Diamond is harder than carbide and so is the logical choice. As supplied, this stone is flat. The metal is backed with plastic and with careful handling it will keep that way. I would not recommend it to be used for sharpening knives directly. There are other products for that, and metal is likely to knock away the diamond particles, damaging the surface.A precision made, useful instrument. I give it five stars.

Good for one time use...
Very very bad product...after the first use on a blunt knife the coarseness of the plate vanished...now it is as plain as a plain piece of any other steel plate...useless dont buy...its better to go for the whetstones...

Practically useless
Doesnt work as directed. The grit gets lost after the first use itself. I used it to sharpen a mild steel knife and it was useless after that.

Worth buy at this price point.
I have been sharpening my own knifes since last two years. I was using silicon carbide stone which was just not hard enough as my knife has Rockwell score of 60. I was skeptical of this dimond plate but after I used it once, I am convinced. Its course grade and just chew through the metal. Use this one when edge gets very rough. I use a few strokes of this, then on stone1000 grit and then strop on newspaper. One issue with this plate is as this does not have any height, you have to work very close to surface on which its kept and also stabilizing this is quite difficult. I use wet towels and use slow strokes.
