Q: Would this work with a crossover cable, so you can avoid the (ridiculous) expense of a 10G switch if you wanted to connect only two PCs together?

The TP-Link TL-SX105 5-port 10Ggps is available now in late 2021 at a not quite so ridiculous expense of $320.

Q: Will i get 10g speed over pcie 2.0?

PCIe1 is 250MB/sec per lane, PCIe2 is 500MB/sec per lane, PCIe3 is 800MB/sec per lane. So an x4 PCIe2 slot has..... 2Gb/sec transfer capability. 10gbe is 1.2Gb/sec transfer speeds, which falls nicely within a PCIe x4 slot. If you're computer can drive data that quickly is another question. A single consumer SATA SSD can only do 400-500MB/sec , and SATA3 can only do 600MB maximum, which is under the speed of the 10gbe. So unless you have a RAID setup with SSDs, you cannot exceed the ethernet connection. Or, a nice NVMe m.2 drive can do 3600MB/sec easily, which will hurt the 10gbe connection.

Yes. That's exactly how I'm using a pair of them, between a Linux file server and desktop. I manually configured IP addresses and routes.

The card comes with a standard size bracket but a low profile bracket is in the box.
