Tamed the Amazon box jungle
I get a LOT of amazon boxes and they pile up like a mountain. I needed a quick go-to tool for cutting them down. I HATE using a utility cutter because its too easy to cut yourself while free-holding the boxes. In general, with a knife, you are ALWAYS cutting toward yourself because you need leverage to press the knife into the cardboard. This Makita multi-cutter solves this problem because by its nature you are pushing the tool away. Much safer. In fact, i'm not sure you actually could cut yourself with this thing. The power and speed are more than adequate. Battery life is fantastic. Cutting flat cardboard is very easy. Cutting the flaps off of boxes is a little harder because you have to maneuver the small "mouth" of this thing into the fold of the flap and the adjacent flap gets in it way, Once you cut about an inch it zips through the rest of the flap. It will only cut single layer cardboard (typical shipping boxes). It won't cut through double layer (appliance) cardboard.Ergonomically, this tool is a little unwieldy due to its length. The safety switch that you must hold in with your thumb could be better designed. There are switches on both sides for lefties. In addition, search for the CANARY Corrugated Cardboard Cutter (DC-190F-1). It works GREAT for SAFELY opening boxes and cutting the box tape while breaking boxes down. Amazon also stocks replacement Makita 198604-1 1-5/8" Multi-Cutter Blades

Quality costs money
I got this to replace the Worx Snip Zip that I could no longer charge since the adaptor cord would not go in the charging socket after about charging it four times. The Makita has an external battery that is no problem to connect to the tool. They both work great but I had to upgrade to something that had a power source that I can rely on. Both the Worx and the Makita cut through cardboard with no problem. The "kit" comes with a durable case with room for the tool, the charger and one battery included. However there is room in the case for two optional additional batteries if you need them. The batteries are unique in that there are LED's which indicate the power level of the battery if you press a button.

Brand New Blades Jam
The media could not be loaded. Blades jump over each other and jam. Had it happen several times when the first few years I had it and just took it apart and reinstalled the circular blade. Eventually, I tried to bend the bottom blade so it would quit jamming and stretched the gap between the blades too far.Ordered brand new upper and lower blades. Just installed and turned on and blades immediately jammed together. Tried another two times and did again both times. I can see nothing else that could be wrong with the tool. I has been very lightly used cutting Amazon boxes at home.Hard to throw out a $140 tool by a well known company, but it is out of warranty. May buy a cheap brand from Walmart like someone mentioned in their review.

Great Tool!
I dont write reviews, but I was looking for something to use on an artificial turf install. This tool probably saved me an hour just today. You can cut topside for all your vertical edges and you dont have to roll the material back. Its awesome, if you are installing turf on a professional level this tool is a no brainer It would pay for itself in one job. I dont know about other materials just wanted guys like me to know!

Lock button requires getting used to it.
I'm pleased with Makita's power cutter. I knew when I saw 4v cutters advertised, that they would be under powered. Makita's 12v cutter could probably even benefit from more power. So, this is the only product, in this category that I could endorse.I noticed the cutter stopping abruptly while cutting cardboard. I found out that my finger had let off the lock button. This feature would have been much better placed in a "natural hold" position like on the bottom of the grip. The lock button is the only feature that I would improve on Makita's Power Cutter.I have not experienced the tool long enough to recharge the battery. It has a variable power source that provides between 10.8v to 12v. I believe this will contribute to longer battery life. This unit should easily outlast a 4v model by a lot.

Electric box knife. If you can afford it, it’s well worth the purchase.
This tool is the best ~$100 I’ve spent in a while. The box knife has been relegated to opening the boxes, and no longer for breaking them down. I immediately got to work on a pre-spring clean breaking down boxes for my parents and again at my own house. It’s not a chainsaw so yes some of the thicker cardboard will be a little effort, but it had no problems slicing through some double thick cardboard today. It will eat through Amazon boxes in seconds. The blade is constant self sharpening so the edge is always sharp, some of the other options had an integral sharpening stone but you had to engage it.The battery is on the plus side of adequate. After about 2 hours on the 2ah battery it needed topped. I went ahead an bought the 2 pack of the 4ah batteries so I can charge one and run the other one, although given my experience with it a single 4ah battery would be more than sufficient for most cutting sessions. The jaws aren’t very wide so it wont open some plastic packages, but it should at least give you a good start if there is a thin edge.Do you need it? Eh, depends on how much you cut down stuff for recycling and how much time you have. It makes it to where I can break down boxes into much smaller sizes much quicker, saving time and space. You can do the same with a box knife-I’ve done it, but it will take you at least 2x the time if not more.
