Q: is this the hooks or just strap they appear to sell separately?

They strap around your wrist like regular straps but instead of wrapping straps around the bar it is the hook. It is one unit. Hope that makes sense!

Q: Do they fit a smaller wrist female?

I would say these are too large for most female wrists. I am a man with small wrists and these are still a bit loose when tightened all the way. This matters a lot in my case as I have bad arthritis in both hands and depend more on the straps holding my weight via my wrists.

Q: Can these be used for hanging leg lifts in place of ab straps?

Yes they can be used in place of Abs Straps. However, I own a set of each and I think the Abs straps are better for doing high reps as they take the worry out of gripping the bar and your body weight is shifted to the straps.

Q: can they be used (do you recommend) using for clean grip while doing front squats?

Not too sure, but it seems like it could..
