Q: Is this the recent re-release of the original version or is it from 1959?

This is as close to the original version that I could find. The rules are the same and the board is the same size. Although the same countries are still there they are drawn a little differently. I liked the pieces that came with this game. I am not to crazy about some of the pieces that come with other Risk boards. I hope this helps.

Q: What are the ages for this game?

The box says 8+ for the age. I guess that an eight year old will understand the battle format but our 9 year old granddaughter (who is fairly quick to pick things up) had a harder time with the strategy of the game. Like adult Monopoly, the games can take a long time and younger ones lose interest. I remember playing it with friends at about 12 years old, but then it had just recently come out. The game does get personal with directly defeating each other player. So if someone can't take losing, he/she may be angry with the person who eliminated them. I agree with the comment about the grudge but you may teach them something.

Q: Does this set feature the Roman numeral troop pieces?

The troop pieces are simple wood cubes for 1 unit and a sort of wooden oval for 10 units. Very simple, very retro.

Q: OK. As of October 2015, does this have the plastic boxes for the armies or not?

My game did not have plastic boxes provided, the armies are stored in small zip-loc style baggies, which is disappointing. The original edition had cardboard inlays which sat in the cavities for the armies, and I'm not sure why this wasn't reproduced.
