Roughly 10 to 10 1/2 inches round

Q: Is it sturdy on a carpeted floor?

Yes, they are sturdy on a carpeted. My problem was that they were too short and you can't adjust the height.

Q: isn't this to low for the recommended Height ? I see this is 28" and the Standard is 33"

No . Actually it a perfect height. It's just about ear level on a standard height couch.
