Noisey drive causes concern for longevity
March 2025: After 5 years, a failed UPS Backup killed this HDD; it was reliable after all, albeit noisey. May 2020: The MaxDigitalData 4TB 64MB Cache 7200PM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Surveillance CCTV DVR Hard Drive was a very good buy. I've had it now for over two weeks, so this review isn't very pertinent. However, after reading the other reviews of longtime owners, I'm concerned about the longevity of this drive. The HDD that came with my inexpensive xMart-o CCTV NVR made *some* noise, like "chikka-chikka -chirrrrr, chikka-chikka". But this one started off with "WHARR WHARR GURRRR GURRRRR", that a "chkrrrlll chkrrrlll chkkrrrrlll". And it sometimes a hard grinding "WHHAAAAAHHHH" or "KHHRRRRRLLL". I am thinking there something wrong with this drive. I have deep concerns about the internals, and then I read about the heat (something that wasn't an issue my last drive). My last drive was "killed" because I couldn't my screen to come back on when it went out automatically. So I just unplugged it, and think it made "CHHKKKRRKKK" sound, after that it stopped being recognized. Not even when I put it inside an USB Enclosure and hooked it to my second PC. When I got the MaxDigitalData SATA HDD, the installation was flawless, and my system had no issue recognizing at initializing it. It even seems to run smoother. I did notice with the last HDD accessing video was sluggish. This does not seem to be the case with this drive. What I can report is that after two weeks the "WHHAARRRRWHARRRR" sound has stopped and has become a quieter ""qurrrrrllll qurrrlllll". Oh, well. It came with a two year warranty and I registered it online (I think..), so if anything happens between now and then...

Working for me.
My hdd is quiet ! 24 hours working fine. As long as it hold up, I would buy again ! DVR case with no fan is about 130 f, NO FAN ! Not hdd case , whole dvr case. Mention of possible blocked vent hole, is for high altitude possible changes, like an airplane use. Not a concern. Just to let air pressure equalize.

great price.
i bought this drive cause all my external storage drives were full and needed more storage. been using a similar make 1 TB drive for my surveillance cam for over a year now in a docking station and it's running fine. this drive i just got is 4 TB surveillance drive, it should last forever just storing and watching movies with it. i am going to use it in the same docking station which has another open slot, for storage. it's the WavLink drive duplicator i got here last year on Amazon for around $20.00 which has also proven it self great to use. have already used it to duplicate my laptop drives and they are perfect. now using it for a docking station. i have to get and use what i can afford.

Perfect drives for my Reolink video camera switch.
My Reolink 16 port switch, for surveillance video cameras, originally had a Seagate 3TB drive. After so many years the drive failed. I ordered two drives since the switch said it would take up to two drives internally. The largest single drive that you can install in this Reolink switch is 4TB. I installed both, the Reolnk switch picked up and initialized both drives without issue. Easy install. Does not include mounting screws.

So far so good.
I'm a huge fan of HGST and these are obviously made by them based on the construction, weight and noise level. Yes, they are heavy and they are loud but I've been using HGST in all my servers, NAS builds and DVR's and have not had a failure in over 4 years (knock on wood) (out of probably 150 drives). I'm not sure if these are blemished, refurbished or what but they seem to work very well and you can't beat the price!

Failed in 1 month
Hard drive were used in my Reolink NVR. Hard drives worked fine for 1 month. Now failed, cannot reformat, cannot access data on drives, but still registering as 100% capacity. Save yourself time and headache and just get one from a reputable brand. Now I have to take down my NVR and remove the drives to return and install new ones.

Low Cost Storage Upgrade. Runs hot, requires DVR with cooling fan.
Update: My original 5 star rating has dropped to 3 stars. I discovered that my security system DVR cannot detect the MaxDigitalData drive during reboot after it has been running for awhile. Everything is OK again after power is removed and the drive cools down. Unfortunately the drive runs too hot and my DVR doesn't have a fan to cool it. I can't risk running my security system with this problem so I'm back to using the old 1TB WD Purple drive. I don't know if the problem I experienced is due to a defective drive or if it's intended that the host DVR have forced air cooling fan (there's no mention of this in the product details). Fortunately I was able to return the drive for refund. ORIGINAL REVIEW BELOW ------------------------------- After seeing this 4TB drive's low price I decided it was time to increase the recording time on my three year old security system. It uses a Samsung SDR-B74301 DVR that has a factory installed 1TB (WD "Purple") drive. Installing the new 4TB drive took less than ten minutes. Summarized as follows: 1. Perform Shutdown from the admin screen and then unplug the power cord. 2. Remove cover (5 screws). Remove drive (4 screws). Unplug SATA cables from old drive. 4. Install new drive. Reinstall the cover. 5. Apply power. When the video image appears a message will report that the HD is not formatted. 6. Log into the admin screen. Choose the Device->HDD tab and perform the format function. 7. In less than a minute the HD is ready and working. Done! The larger hard drive has given me the freedom to increase the recording framerate & resolution. With the old hard drive I had to use lower resolution settings to ensure sufficient record time. Now I have much longer record times with improved image quality. By the way, I don't hear any drive noise during operation. The drive does not include cables or screws; Just re-use your existing hardware. Instructions are not provided with the drive so consult your security DVR manual if you need some technical hand holding. Or entice a techie friend to do it for you.
