Fantasy Japanese Chess Game Set with Wooden Board and Koma Pieces - Shogi Board Game for 2 Players, Ages 7+

The board is approximately 12 1/2 inches by 13 1/2 inches, with a fabric backing that allows the board to fold and also grips the surface that the board is placed on. The piece box has two halves that can be used to place captured pieces on when playing a game. The overall quality of the pieces, script, and board is excellent. It's a great value for the price.

I really liked the authenticity of the pieces. They are elegant, and high-quality. If you are a fan of Chess, you'll like this game. It has a different rhythm to it than Chess because of dropping pieces. The instructions are not in English, but Wikipedia has a very thorough page on Shogi. There are also some great tutorials on YouTube where you can pick it up and learn some rudimentary strategy.

It's a great set but I wish it had English translation on the instructions so people who don't read kanji can correlate the pieces to the symbols easier

I was looking forward to playing with this Shogi set, especially after reading the positive reviews. However, upon taking delivery of the product, I found that the two halves of the folding board did not match at all. Aesthetics are an important part of the Shogi equipment and it would be a big distraction to play on such a board.The playing pieces (koma) were of good quality and the product was carefully packaged. If the board were of uniform coloration, I could overlook the fact that it was made of particle board with a veneer, rather than solid wood.I am returning the product, since it is of unacceptable quality for the price. I know that it must be difficult for a Japanese company to oversee quality control for something manufactured in China, but this is a flaw that would be obvious right away to anybody who saw the board.I am sure that this is probably a one-off situation, so I wouldn't discourage anybody from purchasing the product since it is otherwise of good quality compared to other similar items in the marketplace.

Nicely manufactured fully wooden set, lovely script. The promoted side is written in black, which makes it a bit less recognizable for the begginners.
