Spider-Man: Life Story

I really enjoyed re-reading this graphic novel of Spider-Man/Peter Parker's life re-imagined if he lived a normal lifetime instead of a comic lifetime (frozen at a certain age). It was great to see real world consequences happening because of his decisions and the supporting characters decisions. Especially loved the clone saga, Peter working for the future Foundation and Parker Industries and his relationships with Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane. The art and writing were top notch! The last story focusing on JJJ was perfect and showed his dumb decision to abandon his clone wife. The twists and turns in all the stories through the decades made this a page turner! Highly recommend this one!

Spider-Man: Life Story is a fantastic take on one of Marvel’s most iconic characters. The idea of seeing Peter Parker age in real time adds a fresh perspective and makes the story feel more personal and meaningful.

It was an amazing story about life and the needs of your people and how they change as time moved on, this was truly a great story about sacrifice, joy, and life as a whole. GO READ IT!

I have to admit, I was not expecting this comic to be as good as it was. Probably one of the best Spider-Man comics in the last ten to twenty years. And yes, you read right, this is a what-if scenario of Peter Parker/Spider-Man aging in real-time. In case if you haven't noticed, Marvel and DC characters seem to be literally IMMORTAL with how they keep remaining the same age despite having decades' worth of comics and stories. Then again, DC always has a world-ending reboot every five to ten years, while Marvel just never addresses the fact that Spider-Man himself was attending college during the late 60s and early 70s, while SOMEHOW living in the 2010s as a 30-year-old. And don't get me started on Aunt May! Well, say hello to the comic that takes the idea of Spider-Man starting out in the 1960s (like when the comics first started) and having Peter age from then to the 2010s. And somehow, the author of the comic did an amazing job making all of this work. Not only does he have Peter age, but he also takes several big moments from each decade and focuses on them on each issue as episodic stories. And each decade gets its own, so expect a lot of time-jumping. The art work is especially amazing and the writing itself is good. Highly recommend reading this if you are a fan of the web-singer. I give Spider-Man: Life Story a 4/5 and a "Worth adding to your collection" approval rating!

A newcomer will enjoy it, but miss a chunk of nuance in the story. A long-time fan will find a concerto of the life and times of Peter Parker. Whatever you are expecting, this story both is and isn't it. And I mean that in the best possible way. We have seen the trope of "what if the hero aged normally from when they were introduced" done before -- most notably in Byrne's Generations saga -- but Zdarsky and Bagley give it new weight in this tale. Not only is this a solid tale of what Peter as he accumulates experience and wisdom (because those two are not mutually exclusive) it is also a solid commentary on what was happening to comics and comics readers during those same decades. There are too many places where a story told like this could have come off the rails -- but the creators never let that happen. This is clearly done with love, affection, and a deep-seated desire to remind us all of who Spider-Man is and what his two greatest powers truly are: Peter Parker's spectacular brain and his amazing heart. This last one takes center stage in subtle, but compellingly effective ways as Peter is forced to dance between the dictates of reacting in the immediate (stopping muggers, defeating a rampaging villain) and taking a step back to see what impact he can have on the greater picture. The one caveat in all this is that while this is a gorgeous piece of storytelling it will not resonate as well with those unfamiliar with the major beats of Peter's life. Don't get me wrong, you can pick it up as a gateway book and enjoy the Hell out of it. But if you don't understand the significance of the identity swaps from the Clone Saga in the 90's, Kraven's Last Hunt in the 80's, or Peter's palpable fear when he tackled Morlun and the Inheritors in the 2000's then you will miss some key emotional beats. In sum -- still enjoyable for a newcomer, but for a long-time fan this concerto is "must read."

I was curious about this as a major ASM and Mark Bagley fan and it did not disappoint. This is a must read for anyone frustrated by the constant retcons and odd creative choices of Spider-man's continuity. I really enjoyed seeing a full, completed character arch play out for Peter and was surprised on Zdarsky's take on certain events. It follows Ditko's original run in continuing Peter Parker's personal journey in real-time, capturing major events for both Spider-man and the Marvel universe (mainly Civil War). Some people may not like all of the choices made (with clones and whatnot), but I can't imagine a Spider-man fan who wouldn't enjoy this read. I also think that this is one of the best hardcovers I've ever gotten from Marvel. The dustcover is very well designed with the Marvel colophon blending in seamlessly to the back of Spider-man's head, while the printed cover underneath in red/white is something I wouldn't mind displaying on its own without the dustcover. The hardcover edition also includes the annual, which summarizes JJ Jameson's life in this timeline where he is imprisoned for his crimes (Scorpion + Spider slayers). It was a fun bonus, which made up for his lack of presence in the main story.

This was amazing read and I really enjoy all the history that connects to comic book history about spiderman. It made the series feel new yet with some dash of classic. Reading this story had me in ups and downs. Spiderman is truly a man we can all relate to, especially takes a good man with a good heart to realize his own mistakes and continue to fight and become better in his life. This story I definitely recommend to anyone who loves spiderman.

Deeper and down to earth iteration of Peter story. It is not a graphic novel for kids or just to have fun. It addresses complex topics and issues universal to us, having time and it's impact on our lifes as a core theme.

It was depressing but it has great characters all through out. Some story arcs from other comics are summarized that you need to have prior knowledge before reading.

If you are interested in a self-contained graphic novel about our favourite wall crawler then this is the perfect book! The story is impeccable and heart warming. The real-time journey of Peter Parker as Spider-Man is superbly crafted with the backdrop of some major marvel events. Chip Zdarsky doesn't just blandly repeat these major events, he manages to introduce some amazing twists, turns and surprises that makes the reader wondering... what's next!? Next, the art of this book. All the illustrations in this book are done by Mark Bagley. So if his artwork is not in your wheelhouse it might be hard for you as the reader to fully enjoy this book. That being said, personally I'm a huge fan of Bagley's work. I grew up on his amazing run on ultimate spider-man and to me, Bagley always has been and will be one of the best artists to illustrate Peter Parker and his world. The consistent quality of Bagley's art was a major factor towards the success of this book for me. Finally to wrap it up, I would like to thank Atlantic Publishers for delivering this prestigious book in top notch state. Honestly I was worried that the book might get damaged along the way, but it was delivered in a very prestige condition. So, if anyone of you wonderful people are asking yourself if this book is worth the money, it's a huge YES. Give this book a shot! You will not be disappointed. P.S. You also get a collection of some amazing covers and alternate covers done by a variety of talented artists including Chip Zdarsky.
