So powerful
It’s obvious Elisabeth Elliot had a way with words, and these hit home during a very tough phase of life. I’m very happy I purchased this.

So Different!
I have read Elisabeth Elliot’s books now for over 20 years. I consider her a true mentor. I have also attended her talks. However, this book is different. Since it is a transcription of her talk it has a unique flow. There is a gentleness to it that I didn’t find in her other books as much, a relatability filled with much grace as she does not make suffering at all formulaic or explainable. However she gives us some practical encouragement for how to go through it with the Lord.

Elisabeth Empathizes and Edifies.
Everyone has something to say about suffering. Pithy statements and Bible verses are launched at the weary as though they alone can comfort and alleviate pain. Others, however, emphasize being present. While that certainly speaks volumes for those in suffering, it can still leave questions unanswered and let underlying unbelief continue to fester. In Suffering is Never for Nothing, Elisabeth Elliot is able to both empathize and edify. It's hard to describe a woman like Elisabeth Elliot. I remember first reading Through the Gates of Splendor and being moved to tears at her and Jim's faithfulness to the Aucas. After revealing other difficulties in her life, it's clear that Elisabeth lived a life fraught with suffering. And that's exactly why this book is so powerful.I don't think I read anything new in what she wrote. But it was in the way that she said it that made it so impactful. Speaking frankly can only be bought by experience. No one can retort, "Well, you don't know what it's like." or, "You're just giving me facts. You could never understand where I'm coming from." Elisabeth knows exactly what it's like to suffer. Though her words may be simple and straightforward, her words plumb the depths of the heart due to the weight of her experience. My dad has Stage IV cancer. Members of my family struggle with mental health issues. Throughout all of this many times my heart as asked, "God, why is this happening?" Psalm 77 has been a continued Psalm of lament in my heart, as 2019 concluded. In the midst of my cries and moans, however, God continues to hear. I trust that his no's are always going to be better than any alternative that I could ever conjure up.God doesn't answer my question, "God, why is this happening?" with the precision that I would like him to. But when I ponder the deeper question, "God, can I trust you?" He always answers with a resounding yes.I'd commend this book to anyone who is encountering much suffering.

Best book to read when life is pain loss
I read this book 5 times and each time I learned more and found a little more peace. Our lives were turned upside down by my husbands devastating cancer diagnosis. I have read everything I could find that Elizabeth Elliot has written. She has faced so many losses & her ability to write about her experience is masterful. She is honest & very up front about the journey she took after the deaths of both husbands & the disappointing events as a missionary in the jungle - she makes it clear there is not shortcuts nor magical formula nor wisdom that helps when fear & loss overwhelm you. Instead it is a daily task of doing the next thing even if that chore is sweeping the floor - trusting in God especially when nothing makes sense. My niece just lost her husband from falling of his skateboard without a helmet. She is a mother of 2 small daughters - it was a senseless death which could have been prevented by wearing a helmet. I bought this book from Amazon & had it delivered to her. When she gets around to reading it I am confident she will hear Elizabeth Elliot speaking directly to her helping her to do the next right thing - obediently waiting on God to guide her through the unknown scary future she must travel with 2 daughters
