Simple but effective.
For $64 with free shipping, this product is a great deal. Unless you are a complete moron with no common sense, this slide scanner is simple and easy to use. I bought it to convert a few hundred slides to pictures for my in-laws 50th anniversary party and it did a fine job. After reading the reviews on Amazon, I was a bit sceptical, but I kept in mind that there are more idiots on this planet than intelligent people. Set up was easy, directions were simple, I had no software problems(Vista) and the results were good with slides and negatives. The only complaint I have is that the slide and negative trays are hard to open with man hands and seem fragile, but did not break. If your slides are in good shape you will get good pictures, if they are deteriorated, dirty and dark you will get bad pictures, the little scanner can't turn garbage into gold. I don't normally waste my time and energy reviewing products, but I felt the simple and weak minded gave this affordable and easy to use ION Slide2PC scanner a bad rap.

Won't Work With other Scanners
Despite the negative reviews below I thought I'd give it a try since it has a nice price and I have lots of slides to digitize. Too bad, it doesn't work on my Dell XPS XP system. Unfortunately, the Ion Slide 2PC depends on the old TWAIN scanner drivers. Since it is a camera why couldn't they connect as a camera instead of a flaky, slow scanner? Although it installs easily I found that I cannot calibrate it on my Dell XPS XP system even though I tried to cleanse my system of any other TWAIN remnants. Also, their support does not exist. Weeks have gone by and I can't get a response. I did install it on my sons old XP system and it did work! No scanners. However, it is limited in RAM and the Slide 2 PC is really, really slow there. Don't bother to buy this if you ever had a scanner on your system.

Not bad, but not the best
I am very pleased with the vender. The product itself was simple and effective. The main concern was its tendency to over expose some slides and a few negatives. It would start out with dark and then look pretty good, but often would keep lightening to a point where any light subject was a bright blur. I found that I could sometimes click immediately to save the image when it was too dark and get the image I liked. Since the click to save is delayed, it must be clicked when it is still too dark in order to capture the phase in the middle before it is too light. If one would click when it is ideal, it will wait until the next, too light, phase before it is saved. In other words, it is not professional results at its best, but still very good to save slides and negatives to digital in an acceptable resemblance to the original pictures. It just takes some learned skill at catching the prefered results.I am pleased I have this converter considering the price.

Great scanner - worked better than expected.
I have over 100 negatives from a Nikonos V (underwater camera). I knew that there were several photos that were great, but that most were poor. From a previous experience I knew that to find the good ones I would have to pay a professional scan house to scan them all, which would cost at least $200. That was my motivation to buy this unit. Now that I have it, and have scanned all of the negatives, I can say that I'm extremely pleased with the results - the digital images are actually better than I expected. I used the highest resolution which gave me a 5184 x 3360 resolution image for the JPG file. It takes a few seconds to scan and then transfer but not unreasonably long. The only weird thing is that the scans first have a very strange color - very reddish. So you only see the right coloring after you transfer the images to disk. But at that point, it is quite good. I had no need to photoshop any of them.I had none of the problems mentioned by others. The ArcSoft SW installed and runs fine on a Dell PC with Windows XP. I have not tried slides. Bought it from GizmosForLife, and they shipped quickly and securely. So based on my experience, I highly recommend this product.

Glitchy but gets it done
I love what I'm able to do with this product despite the issues that you'll want to be aware of before purchasing one. I have many many 35mm slides from the 1960s and 70s that I wanted to digitize for preservation and distribution to relatives. This product will accomplish that task, though with some issues. The first is: It wasn't designed for Windows 7, but will work with Windows 7 with some tweaking. I had to download current drivers and editing software from their website before the slide image would appear on my monitor. For whatever reason, Windows will tell you that your driver from the disk is up to date when in fact it is not.Second: The tray only takes 3 mounted slides at a time, and it often catches on the edge of the center mounted slide when attempting to secure the slides before insertion into the scanner. This is not a huge problem, just a mild annoyance, since the tray must be closed properly in order for it not to get stuck in the scanner.Third: My older cpu and graphics card had a hard time running the scanner reliably. The system would frequently lock up within 20 minutes. I recently acquired a new system with an i5 750 and a 1gb ATI Radeon hd 5450 card. On this system it runs very smoothly.Fourth: The color and lighting automatic adjustments are sometimes inconsistent, often adding too much light on an image. So I find myself adjusting manually on each slide. They do give you the controls to do that. I don't mind this at all, since my desire to have as close to perfect images as possible would force me to do that even with a brilliant auto-adjustment.Fifth: When you calibrate the scanner, it lets you designate the quality and file type and color depth. But exiting the scanner program resets the quality to normal, so you have to remember switch it back to what you desire if you should need to close and reopen the scanning program at any time. That's it for the issues. On the positive side, I will say the customer service on this product is outstanding. The man I spoke with about getting it to work in Windows 7 politely and patiently did troubleshooting with me and found solutions very efficiently, despite me being quite new to Windows 7. He even recommended a couple free downloads that he uses for fast editing and saving of pics he has converted. Based on my experience with their tech support, I would feel very confident in buying from this company again. The joy I am getting from seeing images of my parents before they were married and throughout the childhoods of my siblings and me has been significant. Being able to share some of these images with my kin has meant a lot to us. If getting the Slide2PC can do this for you, don't hesitate to purchase one. I found it to be well worth it.
