The book which saved Havana’s National Schools of Arts
Following its successful revolution the Castro regime embarked on an ambitious plan to construct a world-class art school on the site of a former country club in Cubanacan, a far western suburb of Havana. Las Escuelas Nacionales de Arte was never fully completed, the victim of changing national priorities. Unfortunately, during the ensuing near half-century the development fell into disrepair and to some extent was reclaimed by the surrounding jungle.Fortunately for architecture aficionados worldwide, Professor John Loomis chose to keep a spotlight focused on what many inside and beyond Cuba considered to be one of the outstanding architectural achievements of the Revolution. The interest and energy generated by Loomis ultimately led to the Cuban government’s decision to declare Las Escuelas a national monument in November 2010. ENA has been nominated for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage list, and restoration remains underway.Loomis’ Revolution of Forms (second edition) is the authoritative tome on the subject. The narrative is clearly written, tracing the history of each of the schools as well as profiles of each of the architects who designed the individual schools as well as the overall site. ROF is profusely illustrated with photographs and drawings of the five schools.Loomis’ book was so good I bought it twice!

Well documented updated edition
Perfect example of how a publication can contribute to the renovation of a historic complex, in this case the remarkable art schools of Havanna. The well documented updated edition shows photographs both from before and after renovation.

Revolution of Forms Edifying!
I knew very little about these schools when I read this book. The book really explained not only the schools but their importance both then and now. I can't believe that the Cuban government has not had the foresight to take more care of these resources.
