How wide are the gaps between the bars? I have a 6 lb pomeranian. Would she be able to get out through the bars?

Wow. I’m really surprised to hear of dogs and cats able to slip through the slats. They seem very small, but I suppose a determined smaller animal can make it happen. Fortunately, mine keeps 100# and 60# Golden Retriever duo from getting to the kitty food, and kitty litter 🤮🤮🤮, so it’s great for us! Seriously, it’s very nicley constructed, durable, and looks nice.

The gate can extend to 44", what is it's smallest dimension?

The gate cannot extend to 44". It can extend to 37" using the 6" extension included. If you need wider, you will have to take off the 6" extender and add on another extender (I see a 12" extender available on Amazon). So you only gain a net 6" with that extender.

If I put this gate in a door way that still has a door attached, will I still be able to close the door?

Yes, you can still close the door. We have ours installed in the frame of our bedroom door and the door still closes as it normally would.

Does the human door stay open unless you choose to close it? Or does it always swing shut?

The door will stay open if you leave it open. It does not swing shut when left open or slam. It's light weight as well so you don't have to worry about it slamming on anyone either.
