Great for Kids!
Ugh, why do MFGs keep installing twist-shifters on kids bikes? My daughter is 8, and fairly strong for her size/shape, but the twist grip shifters on her Haro are nearly impossible for her to work. This shift has a lot more leverage for shifting "against the spring" and the clicker for the other direction works very well. Easy install if you've messed with bike gears before. She's so much happier with this, made her pretty new ride something to enjoy instead of a hassle. If your kids' bike has twist shift shifters, replace them now with this and stop fighting the bike

Perfect Grip Shifter Replacement. Highly recommend pairing with new rear derailleur.
I purchased a used 2016 or 2017 Trek Precaliber 20 for my son as an introduction to geared bikes. Even while on his test ride I could see he struggled with grip shifter that came with it but figured I could clean it and loosen it up for him. That was not the case. When I got it home and had a chance to really check it out I struggled to shift the thing, a significant blow to my self esteem.Within a couple of rides and a quick internet search I realized this is a common problem with all grip shifter bikes (new and used) and immediately this particular Shimano shifter lever came up as solid alternative.HOW IT WORKS:Long story short, this is a perfect replacement. The thumb button is super easy and the handle is large enough that my son can use his entire hand to grab it and shift. Total game changer for him. Zero issue shifting up or down for him. For the cost this is such a no brainer upgrade. This set comes with a front shifter as well, though in my case we didn't need it since my son's bike is a 1x6. It wasn't hard to find someone who needed that left shifter piece for free.INSTALLATION:I'm no bike mechanic. I once installed a water bottle holder on a bike and I bragged about that for months until my wife told me I had to stop. There are a few YouTube videos that help with this installation and overall it is straightforward enough that if you follow the same steps that you uninstall the old shifter you can get this one back on with only a little effort. I literally took a video of myself taking the old shifter off just so I could be sure and follow the same process getting the new shifter back on. For me the issue was the cable housing and making sure I put all of that back in the right order. In my case, the removal of the grip shifter forced me to really look at the shape of the bikes rear derailleur and it was a bit of a mess. I struggled to calibrate the old derailleur for smooth shifting. I chose to go ahead and replace the rear derailleur as well and I would HIGHLY recommend this, particularly if you are upgrading a used bike. I purchased the Shimano RD-TY500 Tourney Rear derailleur for less than $20 and the combination of that plus the new shifter was incredible. This gets my highest recommendation... again as a non bike mechanic.

Surprisingly decent basic indexed shifter
I bought these for a riser-bar conversion on an old Peugeot and really didn't expect much. I bought them because they were cheap and indexed for a six-speed. Since the Peugeot has six rear cogs, and I didn't want to change that, there aren't a whole lot of options for indexed shifters. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that in spite of the low price these are still pretty decent little shifters. Shifts are accurate, smooth and quick. No, they're not as nice as higher-end Shimano shifters. But they do work well, and if you've got a bike with six cogs -- what we used to call a 12-speed -- then these might be just what you need.

Works flawlessly.
This set of Shimano Thumb Shifters makes an excellent upgrade to your bike. I bought my bike only 3 weeks ago and I just replaced the stock twist shifters with this set of Shimano Thumb Shifters. They take up only a fraction of handlebar space that the twist shifters do. Indexing was quick and easy. These are very affordable too costing les than $20 for the pair.

Great Replacement for Grip Shifters
If you're here looking at this product you're most likely looking for a replacement for a grip shifter on a bike that your child was having difficulty using. This shift lever right here is your solution.First some back story on the problem. The problem isn't that your grip shifter is crappy, its that the spring in the rear derailleur is too strong for little kids hands. As you get into the lower gears you're putting more and more tension on the derailleur thus making it harder to get into the lower gears. This shift lever gives your child a mechanical advantage over the spring so they can get into the lower gears easier. You can still feel a bit of tension building up as you go to the lower gears but my daughter has no problem with it at all.In addition to it solving the shifting problem mentioned, it seems durable and has withstood the abuse of my daughter.Installation is fairly easy, take pics of everything first so you can route the cabling the way it was before. You WILL have to adjust the rear derailleur for the new shift lever. Don't let this intimidate you, there are numerous videos on YouTube showing you how to do this. Prior to replacing this lever I had never adjusted a derailleur before. 5 minutes on YouTube and I was able to do it AND adjust the derailleurs of all my other bikes.Something I didn't see mentioned in other reviews, you will need to buy new handlebar grips for the bike. Bikes with grip shifters come with shorter grips because the shifter is part of the grip.

Perfect for replacing grip shifters on kids bicycles
I replaced the grip shifter on my daughter's 20" 7 speed trek bicycle with this shift lever. It makes it easier for her to learn how to shift gears. The lever is easy to install with the cable already attached. All I had to do was secure the lever and attach the cable to the rear derailleur.

but feels pretty old fashioned and the broken shifter I was replacing ...
This is a case of a mix of pros and cons. First, the description was incomplete regarding what I was getting. It implied index shifting, but really the left (front derailleur) shifter isn't. It does the job, but feels pretty old fashioned and the broken shifter I was replacing was a true, albeit cheap, indexed shifter. The rear works well and is definitely an upgrade. The person I was fixing it for liked the new set up fine, so in the end it was a good value for what I paid. However, next time I'll spring for a rapid fire style.
