Thorough, easy to understand!
After public school for a few years, we decided to homeschool our now twelve and eleven-year-olds. It has become abundantly clear to my children and myself that we are not equipped to move on to more complicated math. They are anxiety-proned where math is concerned, and I need to learn the higher disciplines before I can help them. I bought a set of Basic Math and Pre-Algebra for Dummies, both text and workbooks. The Dummies books are a great guide, for at least two reasons: 1) they are written with the same scope and sequence as our core-aligned books, and 2) The author does a wonderful job of explaining things in a sensible, non threatening way. This is great, because it has opened them up to accepting the information, and they even smiled as we read the intro! I bought one for myself as well, so we can learn math shoulder to shoulder, all the way up to calculus, and possibly beyond. I've never been in trig or calculus classes, but my girls and I will move forward in confidence together. I should also mention that I also bought Kumon for extra practice, and Sylvan book for each as well. Maybe I went a little overboard, but I can tell you that they all fit together in scope and sequence rather nicely, and provide a nice foundation for our "group learning," individual practice, and opportunities to play learning games together.

Good
This is a good primer on basic math and pre-algebra concepts. Like the other "for dummies" books, it distills the explanatory material that you get in the textbooks down to the most important points and then has tips for solving problems, cautions about common mistakes, provides some examples, and gives some problems to work on. It will help develop the fundamental skills that you will need before getting into algebra. I will say, that you need to be aware of your learning style before you get this. Even though it is an easier read than a textbook, if you do not learn well by reading and learn better through more of a traditional lecture and seeing problems worked out, this may not be right for you. But, if you are looking for something that will help you make sense of the textbook and give more examples, this is a good option.

After 20+ years out of school, great help!
I bought this book because I have never taken Algebra and also needed a refresher in Math to get ready to take an entrance exam to go back to school. This book explains everything in detail and gives different ways to figure out a problem. It made math a lot easier to understand for me.

REALLY NEEDED THIS
I needed to take Algebra in College but I was so rusty in math I was not doing well. I searched my favorite online store Amazon and I found this book "Basic Math and Pre-Algebra". This book was so helpful to me that I ordered the book and also downloaded it on my Kindle Fire as well. The book gives you examples and detailed information for all problem solving methods. Although I still don't get why it is important to learn how to work with Alpha Letters and Numbers, I now don't feel quite so lost and frustrated. I now know what questions to ask to improve my math skills. I recommend this book for all Students who have a fear and/or are frustrated with math to get this book. By the way I passed my 1st Algebra class too.

This is a great book to review and refresh the nuts and bolts ...
I find as I age, (somewhat gracefully) that I need to refresh myself from time-to-time. As an electronic technologist, retired, I notice that I'm just not as sharp as I used to be when I was working. I have always believed that a strong foundation makes for a stronger building. So once again, I am refreshing my math skills. This is a great book to review and refresh the nuts and bolts of math. It is geared to understand the why and the wherefore of math and refresh the rusty memory. I recommend it!

Good book to use as a reference
Good book, we chose to try this book first instead of a tutor. The book is helpful and easy to follow. I found that more in depth details were not explained well. This book and its instructions are definitely made for only certain learners. We did end up getting the tutor but for the price, this book is still good to have around as a reference

Book for Dummies breaks it down
I am an older person and I had been trying to learn pre-algebra before finding this book. In the past i had taken a pre-algebra course and had failed it due to not understanding the exponents and expressions. I saw this book and read the intro on it and was pleasantly surprised by what i read. I have the book and have been going thru it by chapter, and i have to say, the way the author has it written is a clearer description of how to work the problems. I am really glad i bought this book. If you have trouble understanding pre-algebra, this book will clearly explain how to work the problems and break it down in simple english for you. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn this subject.

excellent
Excellent book to learn the basics of math and algebra, to either review and polish up on what you already know or start from scratch. Also, it's easy enough to skip sections you don't need and go directly to those you need to work on, since they are separated well. I found it interesting enough though to actually review the very basic math sections; it's written well enough to not be boring.

Decent Fresher
It's a decent refresher, very simplistic, which is what it's intended to do. Just wish some of the proper terms were used. I guess that's how these books operate.

Basic Math and Pre-Algebra for Dummies
`Basic Maths and Pre-Algebra for Dummies' is a great place to go if you want to brush up on your math skills and have felt too intimidated before. In clear language and accessible format it guides your through key math concepts and introduces some basic algebra towards the end. It covers basic addition, subtraction, division and multiplication, as well as fractions, decimals and percents, graphs, geometry and stats, and basic algebra. This follows the typical `dummies' format, and if you have read any other of the dummies book you'll know what to expect. There is the slightly tongue in cheek text delivery, clear icons and obligatory part of tens at the back. I worked my way through this, accompanied with the workbook that goes with this, and my math skills increased incredibly. I realised I knew a lot of this information from school, but this book gave me the confidence to use it and it refreshed my memory about how certain equations are done. A great place to turn if you want to beat those maths demons. Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.

Brilliant book
I had to relearn maths almost entirely to pass my training course, and this book had the answer. It's very well written and doesn't treat you like an idiot for not knowing the basics. Well worth picking up the workbook to go with it.
