Standard size for children. Good for learning and simple calculation.
Item received looks exactly like the picture. The measurements are slightly different from 10.5" x 2.5" x 0.75". The outer box is 10 8/5" x 2.5" x 7/8", and the actual item is 10.5" x 2 3/8" x 0.75".I do not know if it is indeed the standard size as it seems slightly smaller than what's in my memory. When I say it is smaller, I mean the beads height and the space that can be cleared from above and below the bar. The space in between rods are about the same. My hands are very small and the last time I used an abacus was when I was in high school. So the chance for my memory to be wrong is not very likely. Also, the one I used have many more digits than 17 as it was impossible to insert in my book bag like this one.Anyway, after warming up, I found it may be appropriate to call it standard size for children. With 17 digits, it is enough to do simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. If there is anything that really bothers, it is these plastic beads are too slippery to stay in place. I got some trouble reset the beads and do correct calculations at first due to beads slipping away from their positions. Later, I found out that could be improved by laying the abacus over softer surface.

I like it!
This is my first abacus and I got it to help my first grader with math. There is no resistance when sliding the beads up or down so if you bump it too hard, you will have to start over again. I have no idea if the beads on a more expensive one will have no resistance as well.I have absolutely no reason to return this abacus but something in me makes me feel like I should have gotten a more expensive one. We’ve been using this abacus for a few months now and it works great.

Excellent abacus for practice or use.
I love this thing. My math-whiz kid used it to make noise for a while and forgot about it. I brought it out again, she took it in to math class, made the teacher and kids "ooh, aah" and that's it. I still use the calculator on my phone. But this works, and it is really fun trying to keep up with the YouTube tutorial guy who does the 3-million part in-depth abacus tutorials. My Western mind is probably never going to wrap itself around this style of calculating. Hopefully when my kid gets to college math she can make her teacher say "ooh aah" at it. Or, actually use it. In any case, it's really sturdy, makes very satisfying noises and looks great as a decoration on a bookshelf.

Could be better
This tool is brought for my kid who is learning abacus. The tool holds good for their little hands but the points they given are not so visible and the beads could have better. Right now they are little small and slippery.

As many of the comments have already stated this Soroban has some sensitive / low friction beads but this is something that I prefer personally and as you move the beads the Soroban eventually "breaks in" and the friction increases as you use it. Its an all plastic device but very dense and rugged for the price and I would recommend this as a starter item for a newbie to practice and learn on before moving up to the more expensive Sorobans that you may find among other choices. Overall its a good buy for someone looking to practice and start learning the operations before moving on to mental math or flash anzan techniques that stem from knowing how to use a Soroban.

An Inexpensive and Competent Abacus
This abacus is all plastic, but the finish and action are excellent. The bead size is just slightly smaller than the metal frame abaci that are available. I took a gamble and purchased two. I then glued them together with common model cement thus producing a super abacus with two "rooms" like a Roman or Medieval counting board. My super abacus is exactly the same size as the Chinese abaci that are available on Amazon. But by doing this I can tabulate calculations from the lower room in the upper room with no chance of overlap.Shipping was fast and I had no issues with the company.I highly recommend this product especially for experimenting and calculating Roman numerals.
