The Toy That Raised an Entire Generation
YESS 😂 The Toy That Raised an Entire Generation I bought the Speak & Spell 80s Retro Edition and immediately felt like I needed permission from my parents to use it. The second it powered on, I was transported back to a time when cartoons were only on Saturday mornings, TVs weighed as much as a small car, and learning to spell felt like a high-stakes game show hosted by a robot with zero mercy. That voice. You know the one. Flat. Metallic. Emotionless. It doesn’t praise you. It doesn’t comfort you. It simply announces whether you are correct or a disappointment. This thing taught spelling the same way the 80s taught everything: loudly and without apologies. The buttons are big, clicky, and gloriously plastic. Every press sounds like confidence. Or defeat. There is no in-between. You can practically hear a cassette rewinding in the background while it judges your vowel choices. And let’s talk about the experience: You sit there, staring at it, fully confident. You spell the word. It pauses. Your soul leaves your body. Kids today will think it’s a fun toy. Adults will realize autocorrect has been saving them for decades. Final thoughts: This isn’t just a toy—it’s a neon-colored time machine back to leg warmers, synth music, and being humbled by electronics that ran on pure attitude. If you survived the 80s, this will feel like home. If you didn’t, welcome to the training. 10/10. Still smarter than me. Still louder than necessary. Still perfect.

Exactly Like the Original (for good and for bad)
This brings back SO many memories! It is exactly like the Speak & Spell I remember using for hours. Ah, nostalgia! My kids went right to it, and much like me as a kid, like the "Mystery Word" (aka Hangman) game the best. So in that way, it's a hit. I'm sure there's a $0.99 app that would do the same thing - however this will be a cool thing to keep in the car or to pull out when I don't want them lost in the screen time vortex. That being said, I think this needs some updates for today's generation. 1. The keyboard should be QWERTY. In the 70s and 80s, kids wrote the alphabet. Today they are typing in kindergarten, and having the keys in ABC layout is REALLY messing with my kids. Though it's not true to the original, this would be a much better toy if the keys were organized like they are on a typing keyboard. 2. The voice. Argh. I remember being so frustrated with this voice as a kid. You spell what you think it said, and it's wrong. So you repeat-repeat-repeat and try the other thing it might be saying. Nope. Finally it tells you the word and you're like "REALLY?". So the nostalgia is cool for me, but the kids just think it's annoying. I think there should be a toggle switch for the original synthesized voice and then a more "Siri"esque voice that the kids can actually understand. 3. Kids can pick a level: A, B, C, or D. But there isn't really a way to "level-up". It would be awesome if there were a new game mode where kids could earn points, and move up through the levels more like the games they are accustomed to, and to do some head-to-head play games against each other. 4. I think there should be more words. The original Speak & Spell was limited by the technology of the time. There's no reason this one can't have spelling lists from K-12 loaded into it. Heck, it should talk to my laptop and let me enter the week's spelling words to add to the preloaded list. It seems unnecessarily limited. So, bottom line, this is exactly like it was when I was a kid, which is super cool for me. I'd like to see some updates to make it more functional and entertaining for kids today. Edited after more time playing with it: bumped up my rating because my kids are quickly making progress in being able to spell challenging words, and they haven't lost interest. Educational with staying power!

Awesome gift for my great granddaughters 4 and 7
Delighted to find this item. I had one of these for my children who are in there 40’s now. I know firsthand how much this item helps little one get a step up with spelling and reading. Now my grand kids are getting that same advantage. It’s easy to use and mom, dad and my gr daughters LOVE this.

Finicky
Just gave this to my almost six year old for Christmas and he wasn’t sure what to make of it. Once we turned it on, the screen is dim and hard to see. Once we started to play with it, the keys on the top row are very finicky. Pressing “replay” and “repeat” to hear instructions again, it thought I was pressing letter keys from the same column. At times a light touch on the keys seems sufficient, other times it’s like you have to ram onto it to get it to work. Unsure if we will keep it, return it, or try to exchange for another one. For such a classic toy, you think they’d know how to build one that functions better, but maybe we got a defective one. Not overly impressed and neither is my son, so I’m not sure it’s worth the money to begin with.
