Keeley Mini Katana Clean Boost Pedal

With factory-set gain and treble cut engaged this pedal performs as advertised. A boost without coloration or noise. Easy to dial up volume for solos. Works well after distortion (OCD) pedals.

Love the tone isn’t altered or too trebly. It’s the most transparent OD I’ve tried and I tested EP booster from Xotic, Spark from TC electronics, and the MXR pedal - the white one. This one is in a class of its own. Well made, I am starting to notice all Keeley pedals are special.

Lots of volume for not a lot of money! Normal mode gives a nice sweet boosted sound. The high gain mode gives you the sound of a small amp exploding. It's borderline fuzz at that point. Excellent for roll off edge of breakup sounds

This thing is what it is, a clean boost. I play a Les Paul thru a Princeton 65 RI. I've read EP style boosters are better to add "something special" to single coil pups, but for my humbuckers I wanted CLEAN and pure boost. This does that. After dirt it's just a clear dirt volume boost. I personally use it after a light OD, into the Katana, into a heavier OD, and use the Katana to boost my light or OD or goose the heavy OD, which adds a wonderful mild volume boost and gain saturation. The built quality is great. My only real complaint is that it's a complete mystery to me why the "gain" switch is hidden under the chassis - I'd love to experiment with the gain function, as this thing becomes a real neutral gain pedal when that's switched on, but it's just a dip switch inside the unit. I wish there was just a button you could click, or that you could pull out the knob like the on the full sized unit. Besides that, if you know you just want the boost, or the dirt - set it and forget it, and it works just wonderfully. Very clean, very transparent, more-so than any other boost I've read about. Everything Keeley is good stuff.

The Keeley Mini Katana is a great pedal, technologically advanced (low noise, dual stage boost, internal voltage doubling, an incredible 35dB boost) but it clips easily when loaded with a loudish signal to begin with. This is due to the JFET technology the Katana uses. So, it is -by design- a "clean" boost only up to a point. Go ahead with the Mini Katana only if you are possibly happy with some grit in the sound. I returned mine as my sound had to be strictly clean, just louder. I tried the much more humble, cheaper, op-amp based TC Spark Mini and it did not clip for my application (has less boost, but more headroom).

Colors the sound in a biting way. Too much edge. I have other ways of getting that.

Its a perfect clean boost. I don’t hear any coloration at all in clean boost mode. Ive heard others complain that it adds gain, but it adds gain in the same way your guitar volume knob does..naturally. I love it.

Great tone enhancement even for bass. I can hear why these are popular. Unfortunately mine had a bad screech sound so I returned it. I got a competing product which worked and met my needs. Giving 4 stars for a good design. May be some manufacturing quality problems.

Breaks up easily for a "clean boost", not as clean as a TC Spark Mini or a MXR MC401
