when fortune cookies get it right
Big Nate is just going along in sixth grade, trying to enjoy his school year, playing soccer, being part of a band, working on his caricatures of his teachers, and trying to avoid summer school. But when he sees his best friend Francis reading his social studies book before school, Nate goes into full panic mode. Is there a test today? He hasn't studied! And his book is locked in his locker at school! Danger! Danger! Summer School Approaching! Nate has a way of rating all of his school days. This is not an A+ day, with a field trip. It's not even a C-, a substitute teacher day. This has all the markings of an F day, a trainwreck! But somehow, Nate turns it around. And then he gets the fortune cookie, which tells him that he will surpass all others today. But how? Big Nate: In a Class by Himself is the first of the Big Nate novels. Lincoln Peirce, creator of the comic strip Big Nate, wrote and illustrated this book himself. Packed with Nate's big personality and a lot of fun sketches and even a secret code, this book is fun for middle schoolers and for adults who are still in sixth grade in their hearts. What Nate lacks in academic grit, he more than makes up for in fearlessness and humor. He is an endlessly optimistic, energetic trouble-magnet, and every page is a blast to read. The Big Nate books are loads of fun! Highly recommended.

8 year old loves!
My 8-year old son started reading this with a friend and now wants to read all the Nate books. He's an advanced reader and can finish one of these in an hour-and-a-half/two hours. It would be a good book to read with your child - though as a parent you might not find the humor as entertaining. Sitting with your child as they read, explaining the occasional word, and enjoying their laughter is well worth the eye rolls at the juvenile humor.

Big Nate Rocks!
Another Big Nate! There is a lot of Big Nate books. Up am a very big fan of these books. There are highlights to the story, of course... you wish for me to tell you? Alright. I shall. It all starts by Nate coming to his school, P.S. 38. Then he forgot his lunch. So Teddy says he'll share his lunch with him. So he gives him a fortune cookie. Then he gets this Awsome fortune- "today you will surpass all others." That is the best fortune ever (according to me). So then he tries in Socal studies. He gets busted by writing up nicknames for Mrs. Godfrey. He gets a detention slip. The reason was Insolence. What is that? Dunno. So then he goes to Engush. Not my fav subject. So then Nate was going to write a love poem to Jenny, the girl of his dreams (she was going out with Arthur, Nate. Get serious. Just kidding!). But it backfires because of Gina, who, there is only two words for it- a geek and a brat. (Not to be rude or anything). So then he has to forget about the poem. Then he gets in trouble. (Which is basically key for another detention slip). Then comes gym. Then he gets in trouble for wearing coach John's shorts (long story. You'll find out when you read the book). THEN he gets in trouble for speed eating at lunch (green beans. Eww. Gross.). So then he keeps on getting in trouble for doing things he's not supposed to. Then, at detention, he got a pink slip from all the teachers and the principal. So then he finds out that he set the records for the highest number of slips, which means his fortune came true. That was really cool. At my school we don't have detention. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this review and the book. Keep on reading!

People are way too uptight
I read the book prior to my child and didn't see why people think it's not an ok read for children. The truth is that kids relate to this stuff and its actually kind of funny and enjoyable. The Diary of a wimpy kid thing is a great formula to get a kid reading if they aren't the type of kid who will pick up a book on their own. After the first chapter my little girl ran upstairs with the book and didn't come back down until she had finished it. Now she wants the whole series. Thanks to these kinds of children's books, my daughter reads on her own and because of that she is becoming a better student. If your kid struggles to pick up a book, you may want to give this series a shot!

So funny!
My grandson requested this book as a gift, and then he wanted me to read it to him, although he is in third grade and could read it himself. I read it to him and had to stop to chuckle, snort, and giggle all the way through the book. I think he wanted me to have a good time!

Worth the money!
My 10 year old son loves these books. It’s tough finding books that he will read, but this combination of comic/graphic novel is perfect for him and he has been devouring the whole series.

Amazing!
Just pure gold, a great book for kids ages 7-11. It is a great book to help your kids get on to novels, and teach them manners.

I thought it was a pretty good book!
I am 7 years old and I thought it was funny that Nate got in trouble all the time. It seemed that he was pretty bored in school.
