an excellent pair of live albums in one box
The two live CD's that you get with this boxset are two of the best live metal albums I have ever heard. They easily surpass "Emperial Live Ceremony" in terms of setlist, sound quality and overall badassedness.Emperor played these two shows to near perfection, and the production value is at a very high level. Although it is not perfect, the audio quality is above par for live metal shows, it is a bit too bright, the double-bass was slightly muddled in the midst of the crowd screaming and the guitars wailing. The DVD is nothing to write home about. It's good picture quality and is a solid addition to the boxset, as it is always good to see these guys performing in any fashion. But it's a little bare bones, I would have liked to have seen a few more shows added to the DVD, or perhaps some behind the scenes stuff. In the end what matters is the music on the CD's, and if you are looking at this, you know what you are getting: one of the best metal bands of all time playing two massive open-air concerts featuring their biggest songs...this one does not disappoint.

This is Beyond Description...
This is an amazing document of Emperor and essential for fans and for anyone who wants an introduction to Emperor. What really struck me while listening to these songs and reminiscing about those years when I used to listen to Emperor day and night, is the quality of the songwriting. Emperor made some intricate, beautiful, multi-layered, soaring and frenetic black metal. You didn't know this before, you ask me? Of course I did, but its just that the production quality is so PERFECT on this album. You can hear every instrument in balance - the guitars aren't outshining the drums nor are the vocals "lost" amongst the chaos, and the drums don't outblast the guitars into oblivion. It's so perfectly in balance. Also, there is no "haze" or necro "fuzz" that existed on the earliest recordings(esp Wrath of the Tyrant and In the Nightside Eclipse). Yes those recordings were "evil" and the necro stuff added real atmosphere. But now, it is just beyond description to hear everything and witness the amazing, trailblazing epics that Emperor authored so many years ago. I hate to say this because people will go KVLT on me - the recording sounds great and playing sounds so professional. In a good way.Owners of Emperial Live Ceremony will remember that that album was nowhere near as good - at times Ihsahn tried to sing "clean" and was offtune and some of the playing was sloppy. In this live edition, not only has Ihsan's "clean" singing improved, but his "shriek" has gotten better too. And he has backing vocals for those parts where the original song had vocals layered. In fact, I would go so far as to say this is one of the best live recordings I have ever heard (and I am not talking just about metal)! Don't even think twice about getting this. Then sit back with your headphones and let your mind soar to "THE MAJESTY OF THE NIGHT SKY!!"Emperor is Dead. Long live EMPEROR!!!

The Best of Emperor! (Cept its live!)
Disclaimer I'm only gonna be talking about disc 1 which includes the Inferno Festival show in Oslo, Norway on April the 14th, 2006. As I feel that it is the superior set-list of the two discs! Also before you read below I am aware that there was a 2 disc compilation released in 2003 titled "Emperor Shattered Ashes a Decade of Emperial Wrath".Having been a fan of Emperor since 2001 (the year i got introduced to my own personal big 4 of BM, Emperor, Satyricon, Darkthrone, & Mayhem) I always wondered what a quote "Best of Emperor" album would be like and I never believed one could be done that would do this band proper justice. However, it would seem I have been proven wrong because the band did one themselves! Only its played live!To keep things somewhat short this album properly comprises the entire Emperor catalog with classic songs from the earliest demo tape to their last opus Prometheus! For example we got1.Wrath of the Tyrant - from the Wrath of the Tyrant demo and Emperor EPs, the version played is more akin to the EP version.2.Practically every song off their debut record with the exception of "Beyond the Great Vast Forest"3.and later records are well represented as well with 4 songs from "Anthems", 2 from "Equilibrium" and my favorite track from the last record they ever did "In the Wordless Chamber"! Heck even Opus A Satana from the Reverence EP makes an appearance as the closure song to the set-list.4. The atmosphere! Sure this is a live recording so the guitars, bass, drums, vocals and synth are all in really good quality (blasphemy you say? fear not!) and the best part is, older songs like "I am the Black Wizards", "Infinity Burning", "Wrath" and "The Majesty of the Night Sky" all retain their classic feel despite sounding extremely cleaned upIn closure I highly recommend this to any and all fans of Emperor old or new! This is the definitive compilation(ish) album released by them, and if you like it do yourself a favor and pick up their discography! Though I will give a hint to new comers of the first album "In the Nightside Eclipse", pssst buy the 20th anniversary edition it comes with a second disc containing unreleased rehearsal material, as well as a scrapped mix of the album that was suppose to release in 1993...No one shall escape the wrath of the tyrant!Forever the beasts shall wander the earth...Emperor is deadLong live the Emperor!

Le son est excellent, et on retrouve les hymnes les plus connus de l'Empereur : Curse You All Men, Thus Spake The Nightspirit, The Loss And Curse Of Reverence, I Am The Black Wizards, ...Le coffret contient également un DVD du live à...
