A good book to have, may not be too fun to color
i don’t know what to say about this book. I was familiar with Gustaf Dores etchings snd i knew they were dark but i thought somehow they would have made them lighter to be put in coloring book form. They didn’t lol. Some people may say these pages are uncolorable. But i think with some creativity and experimentation one could get this book colored. If you don’t care for greyscale, you will absolutely hate this book. They are the original gustaf etchings unaltered. Even the intro in the beginning acknowledges that some have been damaged over time. Happily, there is the famous Dante portrait in the front that is totally colorable so i’ll definitely be doing that. But hey just flipping through the book, i’m happy to have a book of gustafs work. I’ll color what i can. I deducted stars for the darkness and the fact that images are printed on both sides so now i can’t use alcohol markers which would’ve been helpful with some of these images!Revision: i took time today to color in this book and it was a very u challenge ! i purposely chose a page with very dark/black space and i have to say it came out pretty nice! I don’t recommend prismacolor pencils because they are very soft and the toothy ness of the paper ate away at my pencil! so i switch to polychromos with a harder lead and they worked just great! I think i’ll end up finishing the entire book and it’ll be a fun coffee table book!
