Sensory Processing Disorder parent
My son was diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder at age 5 and Aspergers at age 8. He was subjected to years of therapies while his health continued to decline. TEN YEARS later he was finally accurately diagnosed with B12 deficiency due to Celiac, antacids, and genetics when we began working with an Integrative Physician. My son finally started to improve leaps and bounds. He will never get those years back, but at least he finally has a future. I read Sally Pacholok's first book, "Could It Be B-12?" right after my son's accurate diagnosis to help me understand. She really brought so many things to light that I wish I had known to look for ten years earlier. I have recommended her first book to friends who saw my son's improvements and want to know how my son recovered from "Autism." I'm thrilled that I can now recommend a book specifically geared toward kids!! If you're a mom facing a "sensory processing disorder" diagnosis, you need to read this book right away. Don't settle for an observational label on your child's mental health, when there could be a well-established, easily-treatable biomedical diagnosis with actual scientific research behind it. Don't let your doctor tell you that a few slightly expensive screening tests are "too expensive and excessive" but then expect you to pay thousands and thousands of dollars for occupational, speech, and physical therapists and even more on expensive psychologists who have NO MEDICAL background!!! Just because you call them doctor, doesn't mean they have any more medical training than your average philosopher, pastor, or bar tender. They can pat you on the back, but they can't make your kid well. I wish I could have read this book when my son was a toddler and first started showing signs. The tragedy is that I suggested B12 def to several specialists over the years because my son acted like my grandfather who had B12 def, but because so few doctors recognize the symptoms in kids, I was told repeatedly that it wasn't possible and no one bothered to screen for it. The very sad thing is that most family physicians are aware of Sensory Processing Disorder as a mental health diagnosis but it is not actually recognized as a diagnosis by the American Medical Association. Please, please, please read this book and educate yourself before you accept an "Autism" or "Sensory Processing Disorder" diagnosis.
