Typical textbook with many illustrations
First stab at learning code. Since I have a sideline EBay business, I decided to learn HTML. My intent is to create a business website & transition from EBay to a direct model. There are a couple of enjoyable elements. One - it is richly illustrated, with the illustrations (figures) used to reinforce key lessons & points. Two - there are a couple of ongoing Lab lessons used to build skills, chapter-to-chapter. And I'll add a third - the end of chapter summaries are very concise and will lead a learner to any content that requires further study. In my opinion, one shortcoming - lack of a vocabulary index. In my case, I use this book as part of a formal college class and one of the outcomes is learning key vocabulary. It would've been a good touch to have a dedicated vocabulary section. Will likely retain this book upon completion of my class.LATE EDIT - There is another review that mentions lack of associated data sets for the end-of-chapter labs & reviews. This is a true, accurate observation by that reviewer. As such, the book will be of less practical value for anyone attempting independent study. To date, there doesn't appear to be a way to obtain the data sets absent being an instructor at an institution.

Not bad, but overpriced
It's a good book to learn from for school. Not for self-learning. The problems in the back of the book requires files given to you from your professor. I wish you can get the files downloaded from a website or a CD, so that you can work on the problems on your own. I'm not saying I want the answers. The book doesn't even give you a starting index file for HTML/CSS. You have to get it from your professor who has the original documents (as well as the answers). I paid around $150. It should cost $35. Without the high cost, I would give it a 4 star rating. A 5 if the HTML/CSS files were given, so you can work on it.
